Successful Sessions

Recently when I was watching something on CreativeLIVE the person said you shouldn’t call them photo shoots, you should say the word session.  I have been trying to do that more and more. I don’t know if you have noticed.

Something else I thought I might do is show you all the final images of Lara.  It has been my successful session so far.  I managed to get 11 finished images from it.  I think, because I was a lot more organised and knew what I was hoping to get, it went a lot smoother.

Leanne Cole - Taking a Look Back

It was the first time I used the new skirts I had made and the cloak I purchased.  They were really successful in that Lara really wanted to wear them and seemed very willing to do what I asked.  I do think she loved those skirts.  I suspect they will be used a lot, though I may have to add some colours to them.  The white can be hard to work with.

Leanne Cole - Going With the Flow

Costumes seem to be something that are quite important to these sessions and my mind is going a million miles an hour thinking of what I can make.  I can sew, not necessarily very well, but well enough for costumes for these images.  I can Photoshop many mistakes out.

Leanne Cole - Running Away

Drawing on the images to get special details has been surprising for me.  It is certainly something I like and something I would like to continue, though I also want to be wary of drawing just for the sake of it.  There has to be purpose for it.

Leanne Cole - Uncertainty

Doing some close ups with the models is great as well.  You get a normal type of portrait, yet they are still in character.  I like how they keep that.

Using textures is something that is fairly new to me, but something I am really enjoying.  I am always finding new ways to use them.  They are great for putting on top of fabric to change the fabric slightly.

I am going to put all the images in a gallery for you now.  I hope you enjoy seeing some for the first time and enjoy seeing some again.

  1. Lovely work Leanne. Embrace the white though. Often difficult but it is a neutral and pure element that enhances the model and if you shoot RAW you can control the highlight areas easily. Nice to see so much thought gone into prep. Really nice work!

    • I will still do some white, but I also like the idea of a soft gray, it would look almost white. I do shoot in RAW, so I can process the images in camera raw. I did do good on the prep with this one I think. Thank you so much Andy.

  2. Leanne I love every single one …truly amazing job….You should be very proud

    • I am pretty proud of these, thank you so much.

  4. Very nice Leanne. Love how the wings are made to pop out of the surroundings. looking forward to seeing more “sessions”.

    July 18, 2013
    • Thank you Paul, it was fun trying to do the wings, I think the more I do that sort of thing, hopefully, the better I will get. Hopefully there will be many more sessions to come. Fingers crossed.

  5. I guess the choice of session as compared to shoot is really more appropriate. Your work looks like a narrative but in pictures. You are actually telling a story with the pictures. I really love your creativity and your angles, they gave life to the objects
    Keep up the good work

    July 18, 2013
    • I don’t know, but I guess session sounds more posh, maybe. I like that description, the idea of a narrative, great. I hope so, I give the models stories so they know what I want. Thank you so much, that is wonderful, and I will do my very best to keep it up.

      July 18, 2013
  6. Sessions, shoots, whatever you want to call them the photographs are, as always, superb.

    July 18, 2013
  7. They’re all wonderful, but I’m over the moon with the fairy shots…especially the one of her leaping onto the stump! The bare feet just *make* it for me 😀

    July 18, 2013
    • I am pretty happy with how the fairy shots came out too, the one of her leaping was the last one I did, I wasn’t sure about it, but so good to hear you really like that one. Ahhh bare feet, very important for fairies, don’t you think? 🙂

Wonderful, wonderful images, Leanne. I do agree with Andy Newbold in encouraging you to continue to work with the white. The ethereal nature of the fabric, in the neutral color, does indeed enhance the person. Despite the billowing fabric, her joyful expression is very much still the focal point to me. I think a more distinct color may detract from the heart of your character – which you have captured so well!

    July 18, 2013
    • Thank you Maggie, the problem I am having with the white is that it blow out and become a solid white too quickly. I was thinking of using a slightly off white or a soft grey, so still neutral, but perhaps easier to control, well from a photographic point of view. The billowing fabric is so much fun, I love seeing their faces when they are wearing it.

      July 19, 2013

Great idea! And yes, their faces are magic!

        July 19, 2013
      • Thanks Maggie.

  9. It’s very romantic, I like it!

    July 18, 2013
    • Thank you Susanne, yes there is a romantic element to it, something the models seem to relate to very well.

      July 19, 2013
  10. Glorious shots!!! Great job!!! Second one is awesome. She looks like an angel.

    July 18, 2013
    • Thank you Rexlin, I love the second one too, I was trying something different and it sort of worked.

      July 19, 2013
  11. Leanne I haven’t really commented (probable because I’m usually running here and there) but I do follow all your posts and I just wanted to say that this new path your going down is fantastic. You have a real talent and creative vision as a portrait photographer. You really should try contacting with fashion magazines and see if they will commission you or if you can pitch your portfolio to them. It’s of that caliber 🙂

    July 18, 2013
    • Nice to hear from you Edith, though I know it isn’t always easy to comment, I am terrible at it. Thank you so much, I really love where the work is going and it is going to be exciting to see what it goes in the future. I did try contacting a couple of magazines, but heard nothing back, I am thinking of waiting a while and seeing where all this takes me. I do love the idea of designing my own costumes for the images though. My brain doesn’t stop with ideas. 🙂

      July 19, 2013
      • Be patient Leanne. Something will break. Your concepts remind me very much of Annie Leibovitz’s work.

        July 19, 2013
      • Her name has been coming up a lot in relation to this work, I hope that is a good sign.
I do hope so, I am going to try making some stuff for the images, so I hope that is good too. The costumes seem to be the key to these images.

        July 19, 2013
  12. ‘Session’ sounds a bit more professional I suppose. Fabulous work Leanne!

    July 18, 2013
    • Thank you John, the word session is easier to type than photo shoot, I don’t the word photo stumps me nearly every time I type it and I have always correct it. LOL

      July 19, 2013
      • I understand as certain words are for me difficult to make on the keyboard too. They have no ‘flow’.

        July 19, 2013
      • That is so true, I like that, there are quite a few words for me that have no flow.

        July 19, 2013

    Gorgeous photos! You’re very talented!

    • What a lovely thing to say, thank you.

  14. Visual stories, wordless poems, these shots are beautiful. Sessions or otherwise.

    July 19, 2013
    • Thank you Gina, I like the idea of wordless poems, and visual stories, sounds perfect.

      July 19, 2013

lovely ! I’ve never saw something so beautiful.

    July 19, 2013
    • I am sure you have, but thank you for saying that, certainly makes me feel wonderful.

      July 19, 2013
  16. I haven’t heard of ‘word session’ before – interesting! The images are certainly developing, still very goth – which is not a bad thing 🙂

    July 19, 2013
    • It is interesting, easier to type, LOL, I don’t know, I still call them photo shoots. They are developing, it is fun seeing where they go. I am starting to try and find new locations, so hopefully, I can change them a bit. Thank you Dawn.

      July 19, 2013
  17. Striking, as usual. The stump certainly didn’t have you stumped!
A ‘session’ makes me think of a modern music group. To me the term ‘photo shoot’ is far more descriptive. These fads!

    July 19, 2013
    • Haha, the stump was great, and was part of the reason why I went to that spot, there are a few there from a tree being cut down.
Yes, of course, they do use that word in the music industry. I think session is easier and faster to type than photo shoot, I do have a lot of trouble with my fingers when typing the work word photo and often end up typing phoot, it is a finger twister, if that is the right way of putting it.
      Thanks Colonialist.

      July 19, 2013
      • I have often seen it as just ‘shoot’ which makes sense to me!

        July 19, 2013
      • Yes perhaps, I guess it depends on how much of a wanker you want to be when it comes to using words like session, oh, does that mean I am one. 😉

        July 19, 2013
  18. Wonderful. My favorite is the third one, with her jumping over the stump. All the photos are brilliant so I choose my favorite based on my emotional reaction and that one makes me feel happy.

I can’t believe how much you do. Sewing, photo sessions, building a business, running a business, being in a show, processing images, writing a blog and visiting other people’s blogs. How is this possible? *scratches head*. Are you really 2 people?

    July 19, 2013
    • The one of her jumping was the last one I did, and almost didn’t do, but I am glad I did. I love the movement in it. It was also a fun one to do, she kept laughing or falling off the stump, it was great. She did a great job though. I did have change the arm, the arm in the original shot just didn’t work with the wings.
I don’t do much, I talk a lot, haha. I am not that busy yet, as the business hasn’t really picked up yet, but hopefully it will soon. I haven’t sewn much, but I am liking the idea and wouldn’t mind doing some more. I have some ideas for costumes, and I need to work out how to make them. So not two people yet, hopefully one day, I will be that busy.
      Thanks Nia.

  19. Leanne, this is magical …. I truly mean it. What a fantastic job you have done here. Love the movement in the photos … and I like the innocence. I really like everyone of them.
When I was in Copenhagen on Tuesday I came across an art photographer .. she takes photos of art .. moving art too – please, check her out – http://www.ingridbugge.com/ – the photos she have taken of ballet … is for me mind blowing. When I look at yours here … That white dress Lara has on … the long one – stunning.

    July 19, 2013
    • Oh, thank you Viveka, that means a lot. I love the movement too and something I would like to do more.
Thank you for the link, the ballet photos are gorgeous. I would love to photograph ballet, but it is very difficult to get permission here. The white dress was an idea I got from ballet, so it is good to see you making the connection. Thanks again Viveka.

      July 19, 2013
      • I just fell in love with her photos – they were more or less covering a constructions site – so beautiful when they are blown up so big – and you have so much movements in your photos. That white long dress is graceful in your photos.
You’re so talent .. and I think you have found your niche now .. even I think you where brilliant as architecture photograph, maybe a bit too dark .. but you know me by now.
        Congratulations to this fantastic job.

        July 19, 2013
      • I haven’t had a good look around yet, but I will, her work seems pretty amazing. I do enjoy the movement, fabric is wonderful to have movement with. My mind just keeps thinking of more and more things I can make.
I think I have too, I love doing the architecture, but I feel I have so much more control over this, I like trying to work out what I am going to take, how I am going to do it, where I will take the shots, then taking them, and the final stage of getting them home and working on them in the computer. It is just a great thing to be doing. I really love it.
Thank you so much Viveka, the support I get on the blog is amazing.

        July 19, 2013
      • Leanne, what ever path you take you will be doing great .. because you have the passion – and you have the eye.
I think your portrait photos are so amazing. I understand what you mean with having more control over your work .. I love building and different angles of them .. but still they don’t give movements and feelings – you have to transfer your feelings into the photos.

        July 19, 2013
      • Thanks Viveka, I hope you are right, one never knows until they try. I am going to give this my best shot.

        July 19, 2013
  20. These are really good, Leanne! Love the ethereal look of the skirts. Brilliant.

    July 19, 2013
    • Thank you Richard, I must making those skirts was so worth it, they have proven to be a great draw card, the young ladies love them.
