Are You Covered

scmallee-hpm9274-5I have written another post for Photographers.com.au.  It is all about insurance, something many of us think we don’t need, until we need it.  So if you want some insight into what insurance you should have, then take a look at Are You Covered.  I think this is an important topic for all of us, so please, take a look.

I’m lucky. I used to work in the insurance industry, so when I contact people, I tell THEM what I want and how much I want to be insured for. I always make sure I have New for Old and Accidental damage as well. They are a must

    • I think that is the problem for a lot of us, we don’t really know what we want or how to ask for it. I might have to try that myself. Thank you.

You’re welcome. When you want to know how much you should be insured for, one of the problems people have, is they think about static items in the house, they don’t think about clothing, books, DVDs, CDs etc

        November 13, 2013
      • We realised that a number of years ago when we realised how many books, DVD’s and CD’s we had, well videos really. We were shocked to realised that we had thousands of dollars on books, and no where near enough cover for them. It has been remedied now.

Cool. Don’t forget clothes though 🙂

        November 13, 2013
      • Oh yes, they are included, and the cutlery, and the dishes, the baking stuff, all that. We went room by room.

  2. Having watched in horror as my camera and tripod blew over into a lake I was pleased I had insurance. On another occasion someone deliberately walked into me and claimed I tripped them up with the tripod. Fortunately a friend witnessed the entire thing. Good article. It makes you think.

    November 13, 2013
    • I have been very lucky, I have the insurance, but I have never needed it, though I have a friend who dropped her camera right in front of me, and she was very happy she had insurance. You are so lucky you had the witness, very lucky. Thank you.

  6. I have a separate policy for my equipment. It gives peace of mind!

    November 13, 2013
    • That is a very good think, I am thinking of doing the same.

      November 13, 2013
      • I also have my iphone and laptops insured. Specially the phones. Too expensive to replace

        November 14, 2013
      • We do as well, you are right, they do cost a lot to replace.

  7. Great post, when I did mine I was true to my Virgo nature..we are talking linen, cutlery, medicine cabinet,pantry,frige..if you lose it all these are the small things that add up..imagine setting up as if you were first leaving home and how much you have to get..it soon adds up.

    November 13, 2013
    • We have all that stuff covered as well, that is so true about the small things. Glad you like the post, thank you.

      • Most welcome 🙂 very common for under insured people and with summer approaching a timely reminder 🙂

        November 13, 2013
      • Yes, very timely.

      • Trees down from rain today…crazy weather so really anytime I guess is the right time :)have a great day and stay warm!!

        November 13, 2013
      • I can’t believe we have the heater on in the middle of November, it is too crazy.

        November 13, 2013
      • I know…I went down the back and hauled a wheelbarrow full of wood up to start the fire…and the grasses are growing and then they will dry and we will be in strife..makes it hard when we can’t burn off due to the weather..who knows!! crazy Melbourne 🙂

        November 13, 2013
      • They said we were going to have a record hot summer this year, I am worried it is going to hit us with no warning and then we will be in trouble.

        November 13, 2013
      • I agree…the grass fires this season are the worry..the speed and ferocity is amazing and already last week some putz around here had a burn off on a very very windy day that got away…the older farmers are the worst they can be so complacent especially regarding the use of farm equipment..i hope people are prepared I really do…

        November 13, 2013
      • I do as well. We have a lot of natural parkland around us, a lot, we on the Green belt along the Yarra, so scary.

        November 13, 2013
      • Oh great you have shires as I only to well remember had great ideas such as flammable plants on medians that lit up after drivers tossed butts out of windows..Shire of Yarra Ranges being one of the worst we ever had the pleasure of dealing with…there is a balance between nature and safety..i must say when we burn off here we make so much noise, check habitats etc and any critters have a chance to move..as they did when they cleared the house block next door…but if a wildfire was to come through they have no chance….stay safe!! the burbs are getting a bit complacent in their idea of what threats are posed to them…

        November 13, 2013
      • I have to say our Council is quite good, they make sure the grass on the side where the parkland is is kept down, and they do look after what they have to, the problem is the rest is Park Victoria and they are a problem, there are so many dead trees in the parklands, that is a real problem.

        November 13, 2013
      • Exactly..the wetter the weather the more trees come down and hence the big problem…a real worry!

        November 13, 2013
      • It is a real worry, though many of those trees died during the drought.

        November 13, 2013
      • I know..stress will bring them down especially after a big wet..the roots can’t cope 😦

        November 13, 2013
      • yes, I am sure that is bound to happen. 😦

        November 13, 2013
      • 😦

  8. Thanks for a thought provoking post. I have my camera etc covered, but never thought about someone tripping or such like. Also keeping fingers crossed and a sound fire plan for this fire season in Macedon Ranges.

    November 13, 2013
    • You are welcome Lisa, it is something to consider when you are you out with your camera, or tripod. Yes, fingers crossed, I don’t want to see a repeat of the Black Saturday fires. Thank you.

  9. Great article. I also sell (fire & general) insurance, and a lot of people are really underinsured – as already said – and they forget about a lot of personal effects too – cosmetics, perfumes, food in their freezer, all sorts of stuff. If the worst happened, how much to put you back to where you are? Also, a point to remember, that many contents policies have limits on certain items, and these items have to be listed separately if more than this (and also, don’t forget to include filters, speedlites, remotes, etc, for your camera). Also, you have to ensure a “domestic” policy covers the item if you are using it to generate income – otherwise you need commercial insurance to cover it. Also, many domestice contents policies have liability cover, but again, you may not be covered if you are generating income, so you will need commercial liability insurance. If you are unsure if you and your gear is covered, ask specifically – better to be safe than sorry! Insurance, like backing up all your photos, is there to let you sleep easier, with the hope it is never needed.

    • There is so much to consider, I am sure we are underinsured, but I think my husband would say that we don’t need to get everything again, we have a lot of junk. LOL These are all good things to remember though, we upped our insurance quite a bit a couple of years ago, we should probably do it again. Thank you.

      November 13, 2013
  10. Too bad we do not have liability insurance for the events in my country ….

    November 13, 2013
    • Here you have to take it out yourself, but nothing for individual things, you have to take it all or nothing. Though if you are doing photos as a volunteer for an organisation then you are often covered by their insurance, well that is how it is here. Thanks.

      November 13, 2013
  11. Ahhh Insurance … always a grudge-purchase 😉 but rather necessary!

    November 13, 2013
    • I know exactly what you mean.

  12. Excellent post. Insurance is a must have and waivers too.

    November 14, 2013
    • Thank you, it is amazing how many people don’t think it is important.
