Quiet Thursday – In the Air Again

milkyway-sorrento-stars-back-beach

Different kind of air this time.  Last Saturday night was the new moon here, unfortunately it was also a really bad night, we had lots of rain all day, so it was obvious that it would be too overcast.  I don’t like travelling an hour and half to get nothing, so I stayed home.  On Sunday night, I told my daughter I would take her driving.  We went to Sorrento and I thought if I can get some shots I will, if I can’t, no hassle.

As you can see there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, well almost.  I didn’t stay long, I just took some shots of the milky way over the ocean.  This is the back end of it, really.  the heart isn’t in this part.  I didn’t mind, I was really interested in capturing the ocean as well.

I think this is my favourite.  I love the ocean and how it looks.  This image was actually two images, the ocean is from one image and then the sky from another.  Both taken at about the same time.

I am going to leave it there today.  I hope you are having a quiet day too.

  1. This is probably one of your photo sets that appeals most to me. Like you, I like the last. I was thinking the other day that you need to do some with the Southern Cross. It doesn’t any more special than the other stars until you can’t see it anymore. Then it looks like home.

    July 31, 2014
    • I have photographed it with the Southern Cross, but it is very hard to pick out, the southern cross is probably in those ones, actually. Must look. thanks Julianne.

  3. Great sets!

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you Rajiv.

      July 31, 2014
      • I was going to write a longer comment, but am running cause this is the last day of tax filing!

        July 31, 2014
      • That’s okay, I think you said plenty.

        July 31, 2014
      • Thanks! I hate filing tax returns!

        July 31, 2014
      • I hate doing my tax too.

        July 31, 2014
  4. Oh so impressive.

    July 31, 2014
  5. Leanne, these are gorgeous! Love them both but the 2nd one is stunning.
So happy you got a clear night. Did you try your new ND filter or was this just time.
    Really beautiful.

    July 31, 2014
    • Thanks Robyn, I’m glad the skies were clear too.
I like the second one a lot more too.

      July 31, 2014
  6. Very nice!

    July 31, 2014
  7. Absolutely stunning, all quite nights should look like these, what a wonderful world that would make!

    July 31, 2014
    • Oh yes, how wonderful would that be, thank you.

      July 31, 2014
  8. Oh Leanne, these are sensational. What a way to spend a quiet Thursday. I love the way you captured the ocean as well as the milky way. You are so talented! 🙂 Chris

    July 31, 2014
    • thank you Chris, nice images for a quiet day. 🙂

      July 31, 2014
  9. Love the second shot Leanne…..that’s a cracker.

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you Mark, that is the one I like the most too.

      July 31, 2014
  10. Love these shots!

    July 31, 2014
  11. Absolutely stunning

    July 31, 2014
  12. Hello Leanne,

    Incredible night sky images 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing…

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you Sreejith, and you’re welcome. 🙂

      July 31, 2014
  13. Reblogged this on Hadel.

    July 31, 2014
  14. it’s really a wow photo. Did you use the Nikkor 14-24 2.8?

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you, yes, I did use that lens, great lens for this work.

      July 31, 2014
      • yes, it’s a great lens, but I miss the opportunity to use a filter on it 😦 beside the weight 😦

        July 31, 2014
      • Yeah, not being able to put a filter on it is a pain. I don’t have an issue with the weight, I’m very used to it now. Seems like all my lenses are that heavy.

        July 31, 2014
      • I’m currently considering to replace it by the Sigma 12-24 because of the lack to use filters. On my Iceland trip I tried a Fotodiox WonderPana 145 to cope the problem. But with very bad success. Either I replace the lens or give the Lensinghouse filer a try. I have to love pest or cholera 😦

        July 31, 2014
      • I don’t worry too much about filters, though I have seen one guy that made up a filter system for it. the things I use it for, I don’t tend to need filters.

        July 31, 2014
      • you’re lucky, though

        July 31, 2014
      • Maybe, thanks Solaner.

        July 31, 2014
      • 🙂

        August 1, 2014
  15. Beautiful shot Leanne. Worth to travel for 1 1/2 hours. The stars in the southern hemisphere are amazing in a clear night.

    July 31, 2014
    • Yes, it was, thank you, I’ve heard others say that, don’t actually know though.

      July 31, 2014
      • It’s a huge difference between North and South. Maybe the air is cleaner or ozone layer thinner. The universe must be the same thought.

        July 31, 2014
      • Maybe ozone, it is much thinner here, actually there is a hole in it here.

        July 31, 2014
  16. These shots are breathtaking! The last one looks so mystical and beautiful.

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you, I love how the ocean came out.

      July 31, 2014
  17. I do like that first shot with the Milky Way appearing suspended over the rock….but the ocean in the second shot is great!

    July 31, 2014
    • I like your description of the first one, but like you I love the ocean in the second one.

      July 31, 2014
      • 🙂

        August 2, 2014
  18. 1. Send some rain here!
    2. I like the combination of sky colour and sea colour. It’s very surreal.

    July 31, 2014
    • If I could I would.
Thanks Rajiv, it is funny how different the sky can look at different times.

      July 31, 2014
  19. Glorious photos, Leanne. I have fond memories of Sorrento as I passed through for the ferry to Queenscliff a few years back, but it was daylight and overcast so I didn’t see this part!

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you, you wouldn’t see this part on the ferry, it is on the other side, on the back beach.

      July 31, 2014
  20. What an amazing photograph Leanne 🙂

    July 31, 2014
  21. Stunning!!!

    July 31, 2014
  22. Simply stunning Leanne! Amazing work.

    July 31, 2014
  23. Love these starry shots, Leanne. They look out of this world, another planet. It’s amazing to know that there are so many starts above us, shining down on us when we don’t know it. The sky looks so peaceful and magical, and the waters below menacing and a bit angry. Love it.

Didn’t have much of a quiet day for myself, Leanne. My camera lens seems to either have an air bubble or dust in it, just discovered that after taking it out of the box. Or maybe it’s reflection. Ugh. Last day at work and work surprised me with donuts and a card. Finally. The world is at my feet 🙂 Hope it was a good one for you.

    July 31, 2014
    • The starry night is so amazing, so full of surprises and the unknown, it fascinates me. I don’t think the water was angry, it seemed calm at the time, it was really nice there.

Make sure you find out what the problem is on the lens, so you can take it back if you have to. That is so nice of them to do that, wonderful. Now onto the next stage, where will you start. 🙂

      July 31, 2014
      • I hope you get to photograph starry nights like these in the summer. Don’t know if they will look different than winter’s. It would be nice if you could get a shot of the moon and stars around it.

I hope to find out what’s wrong with my lens if there’s something wrong. I’m sure it’s no biggie, hopefully. It’s going to be a bit of a busy few days up next, so exciting 🙂

        July 31, 2014
      • The only problem with summer is the late nights, not good with late nights, but hope so too. I don’t think there is any way you can do that, with the moon and the stars, the moon is way too bright. You can photograph the moon from the city because of how bright it is, but you can’t do the stars.
Sounds like you are going to be having a lot of fun now that you have stopped working. Oh, I hope it is just a smudge or something and not a major problem. 🙂

        August 1, 2014
  24. Wow. Is this the same sky that wheels over me?

    July 31, 2014
    • Yes probably, how amazing is it? thank you Rich.

      July 31, 2014
  25. Love this Leanne, absolutely love it. MM

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you MM, that is great to hear.

      July 31, 2014
  26. I’m starstruck! (heh)
How long were the exposures for those photos?

    July 31, 2014
    • Haha, that’s fantastic David, thank you.
      They were 30 second exposures.

      July 31, 2014
  27. WOW!!!! (That’s all I can manage….So beautiful, I’m speechless)

    July 31, 2014
    • Thanks Tracey, that word is good enough.

      July 31, 2014
  28. Faqeeha Aleem #

This looks so surreal 🙂 What an amazing take! Absolutely Gorgeous

    July 31, 2014
    • I like that word surreal, thank you. 🙂

  29. Truly out-of-this world photos! I love waking up every morning and seeing your photography. Great work!

    July 31, 2014
    • What a lovely compliment to get when I wake up Kavi, thank you so much.

      August 1, 2014
  30. Perfect Leanne! I am hoping to begin my ocean series in oil pastels in August so I might take you up on your offer before – will be in touch. Thank you and this was a beautiful series of photographs to see this morning of the Milky Way – love it!

    July 31, 2014
    • I will have to see what I can get for you then Mary, I want to get more photos of the ocean. Thank you, I love doing shots like this, the next step is to try with the full moon.

      August 1, 2014
  31. Jackie Saulmon Ramirez #

I can now say I’ve been to another planet! These images are ab-so-lutely stunning! ❤ ❤

    July 31, 2014
    • Now wouldn’t that be amazing, thank you Jackie.

      August 1, 2014
  32. Beautiful, Leanne! Did you use Auto White Balance; a warmer preset; colour tone these in post or was the sky this orange from light haze? It always amazes me what the camera sensor picks up during these night exposures so it wouldn’t surprise if this was what you captured either.
Regardless, the coastal setting take these to a new level. You should go over to the Apostles next!

    July 31, 2014
    • Thank you Distan, it was what the camera captured with auto white balance. I love seeing how different they can be. Sometimes the photos come out quite blue and then other times they come out very warm, you just never know. I think there must be a reason and I might have to start taking more notes on the conditions.
Funny you should mention the Apostles, have book some accommodation in Apollo Bay to try for the next new moon. Will be interesting to see what I get.

    Shelagh

    August 1, 2014
    • Thank you Shelagh, not too bad, would like to do more with the ocean.

      August 1, 2014
      • My pleasure, Leanne, and please do; while the Milky Way certainly contributed, you’ve given it a magical quality. BTW, I very much appreciate your visits to my second site and a “like” from you for a given photo is meaningful to me. Thank you!

        August 1, 2014
      • I plan on it, just not sure when, would love to do some with the moonlight. Thank you, that is so nice of you to say and you are so very welcome.

        August 1, 2014
      • 🙂 … and, right, it’s just a matter of moonlight, the drives there and back and that little matter of sleep, yes?

        August 1, 2014
      • Oh yes, at this time of the year it isn’t too bad, summer is worse with the sun going down a lot later. 😀

        August 1, 2014
  39. This is amazing!! My next goal is to learn astrophotography!!

    August 1, 2014
    • There have been a couple of posts here on it, so you should go and check them out, just look up astrophotography in the search, lots of information there to teach you how. Good luck and thank you.

  61. Some excellent photos Leanne! Makes me want to get out and do some astrophotography. Now only if everything would just line up so I’d be able to do so.

    August 2, 2014
    • I am sure it will eventually Justin, I think patience is the key, can’t believe I’m preaching patience, but there you are. It can be frustrating. I was watching this thing on the planets yesterday and some guy was trying to see the sun, and could only do it during a solar eclipse and just as the eclipse started happening the clouds started rolling in. At least we only have to wait a month for the next opportunity. Thanks Justin.

      August 2, 2014
  62. poppytump #

Such a magical combination Leanne ! Love it … and now paying more attention I can see it’s definitely from the Southern hemisphere . The prongs are pointing upwards 🙂
These images more than makes up for that pesky rain and no moon shots .

    August 2, 2014
    • I always thought they would be the same way up. I’m trying to get my head around the whole where in the universe we are and how it works, why we see the milky way better than the northern hemisphere, I don’t mind adding that I am pretty confused about it all. LOL. They do, wait till you see the ones I just posted for my weekend wandering post. Thanks Poppytump.

      August 2, 2014
  63. So beautiful…. WOW

Aaaa! So beautiful! I’ve never seen stars like when I visited the antipodes. You’ve captured them gorgeously.

    August 2, 2014
    • Thank you, I think that is the thing about photographing them, the camera picks up a lot more than we can see with our eyes. It doesn’t look like that when you just look at it.

      August 2, 2014
  65. Do you have a walk through of how you achieved such great shots?

    August 2, 2014
    • Do you mean of the milky way, John did a post on how to do it recently, there was link at the bottom of the text. Is that what you mean?

      August 2, 2014
  66. This one is intriguing and tops your photo series !!!
