Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Slowing Down

Things are slowing slowing down. It is nice to be able to catch my breath.  Easter is a welcome break this year, I’m looking forward to just taking things easy.

Blood moon

According to the app on my phone, “Phases of the Moon”, this Saturday night is going to be another blood moon.  I am so happy that I’ve been lent the 150-600mm Tamron Lens from Maxwell International Australia so I can try it out on the blood moon.  The last one was a disaster here, it was too overcast and we hardly got anything. Unfortunately the forecast is for similar weather this Saturday night, so I might have to do a rethink and go somewhere else.  Not sure where yet, but away from the bad weather.

Newsletter

I really want to do this newsletter, but it is proving to be difficult finding the time, soLeanneCole-lilies-20130901-8377 I am making the decision, at this stage, of instead of doing it every other month, I will work on getting it out every two, so it will be a bi-monthly one.  I hope that is okay with you.

Beep Beep Boop

First of all, I have to say, who on earth thinks of these names or saying? Serioulsy!

I know there are ways of finding the old classic editor, but I decided to give the new one a go. For the last week I’ve been using it, and getting used to it.  It is not as bad as I first thought.  I think they have made the font bigger, or done something so it is bigger on my screen and much easier to see.

I like the aspect that it is closer to what a post actually looks like.  I get a better idea of what the post will look like when it is posted, which is good.  Of course many things have been changed around, and I’m not going to lie, there are things that don’t work.  I hope they scbirds-5hpm4862-5will be fixed.

If you are using the new editor you need to keep an eye on the Advance Settings, for some reason settings that you have set up aren’t working and you have to keep checking boxes, like the “Show Sharing Buttons” and the “Show Likes”. They are things I hope they fix up and have put something in the forums about it.

The other thing I don’t like are the publish and save draft buttons.  Sometimes they change positions, so you can accidentally publish a post before you mean to when what you really wanted to do was just save the draft. They were kept separate in the old one, and I think they should do the same with the new one.

I’m not completely sold on it, but the more I use it, I suppose the more I will get used to it.  Time will tell.

Social Snappers

I have dates and places now, even times.

  • April 19th – 10am Fitzroy Gardens, taking photos of the Autumn colours.
  • May 3rd – 6.30am Early morning in the city, taking photos along the Yarra River
  • May 17th – 1.30pm Royal Exhibition Building, photographing outside and hopefully get a tour as well
  • May 31st – 1pm Cranbourne Botanical Gardens
  • June 14th – 12.30pm Werribee Zoo

As I said, they will be free this term, see how we go with them.  I am also going to see about doing some classes on some things at some stage as well.

Online Classes with Mescroses-8787-3

I am thinking of offering different Online classes.  I know that not everyone wants up to 5 sessions, so maybe I can offer just a couple of individual ones, or some longer ones.  I could specific classes to show people something specific that I do or they want to learn.  I would like to know what people would be interested in.  Though I guess I may have to accept that it isn’t what people want from me.

Photos

Since we’ve been looking at lots of flowers I decided to go through my archives today and see what old photo of flowers I have.  Funny really, they look so boring after yesterday.

  2. Art! Thank you!

  3. Beautiful images. The monochrome images of the lilies (?) are very striking.

I still can’t get used to beep boop or whatever. I confess to being an old dog who finds new tricks difficult but I’m finding it sucks too much time to try and use the new format. I need blogging to fit into my life with ease.

    March 31, 2015
    • I did those a while back, trying some new things.
Haha, I decided to try it for a week, and see how I went, I am feeling better about it now, and I do really like how fast it saves drafts, and I like how it looks more like my posts. I understand that too.
      Thanks Laura.

      March 31, 2015
  4. Looking forward to your moon photos. I hope the weather cooperates. I think being on the east coast of North America I only have a slim chance of seeing a partial eclipse.

    March 31, 2015
    • Yeah, according to the map you might not see it. We’ve been very lucky and have got all of them. I really hope the weather is better this time, I don’t want to see more cloud than red moon. Thanks Cynthia.

      March 31, 2015
  5. Your lilies are lovely, especially the one with the curving stem. In regards to the Beep Beep Boop, I tried it a couple of times when it first came out, but couldn’t figure out how to preview the post before publishing, I would go to preview and then seemed forced to publish, couldn’t go back to make any changes. Maybe that has been fixed, but I continue to use the old format, thank goodness they left that for us to use if desired.

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you Angeline, I was trying something with that. There is a preview button at the bottom now, very easy to see, I use it all the time, it definitely doesn’t publish the post when you press it.

      March 31, 2015
  6. I would be interested in anything that has to do with Photoshop. At the moment mostly still the basics, how to add a texture and change the sky. I would love if I could just do one and then work with what I learned and then when I get to something I can’t figure out alone do another one or something like that…

    March 31, 2015
    • I am sure we could do that if you are really interested. It is probably a good way of doing things too. Maybe send me an email, we can talk about it. I can record the sessions too, so you can get that as well.

      March 31, 2015
  7. Your images are simply stunning! I cannot wait to see your pics of Saturday’s rare blood moon.

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you Lindsay, as long as the weather cooperates, I should be fine.

      March 31, 2015
  8. Love the droopy purple tulips, Leanne. I confess I’ve only used the new WP editor once. It ate my draft, and I wasn’t too happy about that. I shall hang on until they snatch the old one from my stiff keyboarding hands. 😀 Or at least until they get the kinks out of the new one.

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you Elen, I loved doing those tulips. Haha, I resisted using it for a while, but I have been forcing myself to use it and when I go back to edit an old draft of something and get the old editor, I want the new one back. I think they are still improving it, so hopefully it will get even better. I have had a couple of issues, but just finished chatting with someone from WordPress and got that all sorted out, so brilliant.

      March 31, 2015
  9. these photos are exquisite Leanne. I have looked them over now a few times. I love them!

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you Cybele they seem a bit twee after all the great stuff from the last day or so, but I did love doing them.

      March 31, 2015
  10. PS Glad things are slowing down for you!! I’ve had to force myself this last while!

    March 31, 2015
    • You do have to at times, don’t you, it is nice to settle down and take some time.

      March 31, 2015
  11. Nice gallery. I may need to revisit some of my floral images.

Beep, Beep, Boop – WP needs to get rid of that screen. It makes the new editor appear amateurish, not worthy to be used. The other part is that it has the feel, or sense, it largely remains an unfinished interface, alpha stage nowhere close to beta. I do agree with you it seems they have made it larger.

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you David, it is nice to revisit old work, see much you have changed, or not, which is what I find sometimes.

I know, it is so stupid, we aren’t children for goodness sake. I think they have done quite a bit of work on it, and apparently are continuing too, so it is good if people use it and give feedback, I think it is here to stay, so we should try to help them make it better. I just gave more feedback as well.

      March 31, 2015
  12. LOL – Beep Beep Boop! When I first saw that I was huh? LOL I am still using the older editor and am quite happy with it as long as I can use it.
I absolutely love love love your Calla Lily shots! The Cally Lily is such a beautiful and very elegant flower. Last year I worked on some Calla Lily shots – the local floral parc has a lovely very large plant with many – I patiently awaited for them to bloom. I plan on continuing on going back this year.

    March 31, 2015
    • I am starting to prefer the new one, which surprises me. I like using it and finding what I don’t like and then letting them know, hopefully they will change some things.
I have them growing in my garden, all over the place, but they died off for summer and are growing again now, so will have to wait before I can photograph them again. I love it when they are flowering. That is great that you have somewhere where you can photograph them Debby, I love them. Thank you.

      March 31, 2015
      • How lovely to have them in your own garden.

        March 31, 2015
      • I have them in lots of places around the garden, they seem to like it as they keep growing in new places, I really don’t mine.

  14. Margy Rydzynski #

I’m having similar problems with the new WordPress editor. I teach a class in WordPress.com and it’s confusing both me and my students. I’ll have to give it another look.

    March 31, 2015
    • There are a couple of things that I find weird, one of them was solved this morning, which is good, but the other, I will have to be attentive. I am getting quite used to it now, and am starting to prefer it to the old one. Which I didn’t think would happen.

      March 31, 2015
      • Margy Rydzynski #

Hopefully, things will get better integrated over time.

        April 4, 2015
      • I’m sure they will Margy. Thank you.

        April 4, 2015
  15. Beautiful photos as always! I have not been forced into the new editor just yet but am certain that time will come. Good Lord, leave the thing alone – the old one works fine and why the beep-beep-boop thing? Most of us here are not infants. G’day! 🙂

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you John. I am getting used to it, and I have to say I am preferring it, I like the narrower screen as it is more like my theme. I’m with you on the beep beep boop, whoever thought of that, OMG. I got a new computer and the mcafee stuff was on it, and then it wouldn’t let me open any websites, kept saying to me “whoa, are you sure you wanna go there”, well yes, that is why I clicked on it, but seriously, the whoa, what the hell, is this what they think of us, that they have to use stupid terms to get people’s attention, that annoyed me more than anything else. I couldn’t stop it doing it, so I uninstalled it.

      March 31, 2015
      • I see, Do you use Mac? I use Avast on my Mac Air, it never bothers me unless there is a real threat which is rare. Boop Boop!! 😉

        March 31, 2015
      • No I use a PC, my husband hates Apple and won’t ever let me get one.

        March 31, 2015
      • Hmm, sorry about that LOL!! Kinda biased in that department.

        March 31, 2015
      • I am with him, I have to say, I considered buying one, but when I realised how much they would cost compared to a PC and wouldn’t give me any extra benefits for what I needed, I decided to keep most of my money and buy a PC. It sits beside the desk doing what it does and I love it.

        March 31, 2015
      • My wife loves her PC’s too. As long as it get’s the job done right. 🙂

        March 31, 2015
      • Yep, pretty much. I don’t think windows is nearly as bad as it used to be either. I haven’t had it crash on me for a long time. 🙂

        March 31, 2015
  16. Lovely depiction of the calla lily…

    March 31, 2015
  17. I am still not using the new editor. Like you I found that I couldn’t be sure that I wasn’t about to publish a Draft. So I am sticking with the old editor until the new one is tweaked some more.

I think your flower photos are great. One thing you might want to try, though, is working on one of them to see if you can recreate the “moodiness” of Paul Barson’s look (which elicits a whole lot of Likes from a lot of folks).

    March 31, 2015
    • I am using the new one all the time now, have been for the last week. I am getting better at watching the buttons and making sure I don’t press publish, though what I really need to do is schedule each post first, so it doesn’t happen. I do most of my posts ahead of time, so it isn’t really an issue.
Thanks Derek, you know I don’t want to imitate his work, I like it, but then that would be stealing his ideas, I don’t want to do that. I got some inspiration and realised I could do more with my own, so that is what I have done. I gather you don’t like the ones I did.

      March 31, 2015
      • No, no, Leanne, I do like what you have done in your flower photos. My suggestion is based upon my experience as I continually learn more about processing my own photos. If I see another photographer’s work that catches my attention, I don’t try to duplicate it. Instead I try to come to understand what processing choices were made to achieve the effect. That helps me learn how I might bring out an aspect hiding in my own images.

Paul Barson, by his own description, spends a lot of time setting up his shot, and then masses more time processing it, drawing, amongst other things, upon his childhood memories and the work of artists he admires. There is no way I would want to try to do the same thing. In fact, I couldn’t because we are bound to have different art tastes. But I can still learn from his work.

For example, I might try, with one of your white lily images, to lower the brightness slightly, drawing the viewer’s eye more to the petal detail than to the overall flower. Just a different approach to experiment with. Not that what you have shown is not beautiful – it is. In fact, I have reblogged your previous post to our photo group and to Facebook, and have placed a link to your site on our website.

        March 31, 2015
      • I must admit I do the same, try and work out what they have done, if I was going to do it what I would do.

Yes, you can, I find I always pick up something from someone else, there is always something to learn.

I guess we do all do things differently, which makes it all very interesting. You have made some great points Derek, sounds like we work in similar ways, but come up with different work, how amazing is the world. Thanks for the link and share.

        April 1, 2015
  18. Hi Leanne. I’m not a big fan of the new interface either. To me the old one was well laid out and functional. Every time the new one would appear I would find the old one and continue using it.

Today, however that didn’t work and I couldn’t find the old one. I’m not sure why I’m not allowed to use the old one if I want to. I pay an additional amount each year to have a custom site and why I’m forced to use an editor that I don’t like is beyond me.

    So much for customer service.

Love your blog and your photography.

    Regards,
    Dave

    March 31, 2015
    • Hey Dave, I actually like the new one, and am starting to prefer it over the old one. I have been using it for about a week now, and it is getting better for me, I can find things easily. I’ve had a couple of problems, but have managed to sort them out.
WordPress are very good at making you use what you don’t like, it has been happening forever, they change things and it isn’t very often that they go back. I would suggest trying it out, do it for a few days and get used to it, and then see how you go.
Thank you so much for that. always nice to hear.

      March 31, 2015
  19. I hope you get to have a restful break with your family Leanne. I think it’s better to cut back on the newsletter and do something great that you can manage instead of feeling hassled and putting out a product you’re not satisfied with. I’m looking forward to my next newsletter, whenever it arrives. It will be a lovely surprise.

    March 31, 2015
    • I think I will Carol. We are getting all the lights rewired in the house this week, so I will be forced to stay home and do very little. I am glad you think that is the best way, I think it will be better as well. Thank you. YOu have a good Easter as well.

      March 31, 2015
  20. I love your photos. I managed to get some photos of the blood moon last year. Good luck with your attempts. I will on the look out too.

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you Raewyn, every time I try something seems to happen. I will be able to see it from my house, so think I might stay put this time, and hopefully the weather will cooperate. Good luck.

      March 31, 2015
  21. The calle is such a gorgeous flower! You captured its beauty perfectly! ❤

    March 31, 2015
    • I think so too Lucy, it is gorgeous, so elegant. Thank you.

      March 31, 2015
  22. Hi Leanne, I’m a regular reader but I don’t think I’ve commented before. Just noticed your comment about the new format re the likes and sharing buttons. Have you set them up in the Configuration > Sharing > Sharing Buttons already? That should sort things out, i.e. you won’t need to keep selecting them each time you post.

    March 31, 2015
    • Hello there, nice to hear from you. Yes, I did have them all set up, I got onto someone this morning and apparently there was a problem with google+ so I disconnected and then reconnected and it started working so all good now. Hopefully anyway. Yes, having to select them each time was getting tiresome. Thanks for advice.

      March 31, 2015
  23. Love the calla lilies, Leanne, they are such a shapely, elegant plant. And I really like when your watermark follows the shape of a petal. It’s there but discreet and it looks artistic rather than in your face, taking away from the beautiful image.

Thanks for the heads up about the blood moon, too! With the weather forecast, I’m not too hopeful… we will probably be floating around the Western side of the Prom, Oberon Bay, or something like this. So I intend to set up on the beach with my tripod and big lens if the moon is visible! I’ve downloaded the app too, as it’s really useful!

    March 31, 2015
    • I agree Chris, I love them too, they are growing again in the garden, so I should have new flowers to photograph soon. Oh yes the watermark, I try and do similar things on some of my work when I can. Depends

YOu’re welcome, apparently the eclipse starts from about 8pm and will be in full eclipse about 11, so I am hoping I will get some better shots than last time. The app is great. Daylight savings finishes this weekend so we will have to plan some trips for doing the milky way.
Thanks Chris, good luck getting the moon.

      March 31, 2015
  24. I like the new editor now that I have got used to it.

I took an online lesson a year or so ago. It helped a lot. Hope I can learn from you. 🙂

    March 31, 2015
    • That’s great to hear Amy, I think they can be great, and a lot more personal as well. 🙂

      March 31, 2015
  26. They are beautiful, like sculptures. Speaking of the new editor (blahh!) your like button has disappeared for the second time so I am LIKING this in here 🙂

    March 31, 2015
    • Thanks Kaz, I know, it is a bit weird, but hopefully it is back now, apparently something was set up wrong.

      March 31, 2015
  27. Blood Moon huh…..could be interesting if it’s not cloudy

    March 31, 2015
  28. Never, ever boring! 😀

    March 31, 2015
  29. I love how these flowers’ contours become almost organic and free-form in their closeups – your lighting and perspectives are all exquisite as well – but that goes without saying.
    AnnMarie 🙂

    March 31, 2015
    • Thank you AnnMarie, I was trying some things, but at the time my photoshop skills weren’t good enough to get what I wanted, I should try it again now.

I’ve used the new editor several times, and while it works, I still prefer the old. I could use either one. I wish I didn’t have to go to 90% page zoom to hit enter after a photo is added so I can add another. That is true of both editors. Maybe that is because I have 11.6: screen, but still…

    March 31, 2015
    • I am finding that many of my issues with it are being ironed out, so I just use it now. It hasn’t been an problem. I like the issue you have, too funny, thanks Robert.

  37. LOL on the beep beep boop! It’s annoying! OMG, I have to check to see if the sharing buttons went away on my posts. Thanks for the warning.

I decided to do an in person class. It’s really inexpensive, but it is in danger of being canceled for lack of enrollment. So I wouldn’t take it personally, I think that people are budget conscious these days and muddling through with free stuff.

The photos are great. I like the first one with the purple flowers against the black background.

I hope I learn how to work with Photoshop layers in this class. I want to fool around with various ideas.

    April 3, 2015
    • I know, I think if they got rid of that they would find more people would like it. Yeah, have to be careful, I keep checkingnow.
That’s a shame about the possibility of class cancellation. I have found quite a few people like the one on one better, then they can learn exactly what they want to learn and don’t have to worry about others in the class, or someone in the class being too dominate and taking over. I like it too, more challenging and interesting, it makes me learn more as well. It has been wonderful.
Thank you, I am enjoying doing the flowers and looking at older ones I’ve done.
Layers are the best, I love playing with them and seeing what I can do, brilliant.
Thanks Nicci good luck with your class.

      April 3, 2015
      • Hi Leanne, I think that is really great that people are wanting the one-on-one classes with you. That’s good news. My class is going forward. They are going to reduce the number of hours a bit, but that’s okay. I learned how to use all the selection tools tonight, and a bit more about layers, which I already knew. But it is a relief to be learning how to really use the selection tools. I like her syllabus as it is good for learning the basics. Also the goals of the class happen to be exactly what I want, which is to cut out images from backgrounds and work better with masking and layers. I’ve muddled through, but I’m learning the tools better. I really enjoyed it and it got my mind off of writing, which I really needed today. 🙂 I enjoy Photoshop a lot.

        April 3, 2015
      • Thanks Nicci, great that you are learning how to use Photoshop, I love photoshop. Good luck with it.

        April 3, 2015
  38. wonderful
