Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Moving Forward

Another busy week, but I need to start finding time to work on this magazine that I am going forward with. The weather has been a bit disappointing and so I have been cancelling things and changing dates, but then again, it also means days at home to work on other projects.

One on One Photography Sessions

The weather hasn’t been great for them, but we are determined to do them.  I’ve had to reorganize a couple, but the weather is meant to get better.  If you are in Melbourne, snow is predicted in the nearby mountains on Wednesday. Very early for snow, I think it is an indication of what this scfalls-0022winter is going to be like.

I wanted to say that if you want to learn to use your camera, or maybe just go out and take photos with me, then you can book your own One on One Photography session with me.  I charge $280 for them, and they are over 4 hours, but you can do it in one session, or do it over 2 sessions, which is a lovely way as well.  Send me an email if you’re interested, leanne@leannecole.com.au.

Astrophotography Class

In June I am running a Astrophotography Class in June, for anyone who would like a lesson on how to do it.  The class is $120 and we will be going to Sorrento in the afternoon to do some photography first, maybe a sunset, then dinner and back to the steavensons-falls-marysville-waterfall-morning-073beach to capture the Milky Way.  It is on Saturday June the 13th.  I’m staying down there for the weekend, so lots of time to get other photos as well.  Again, if you are interested, then please send me an email, leanne@leannecole.com.au.  Places will be limited.

Dynamic Range, Magazine for Highlighting Women’s Photography

Plans are still being ironed out about the shape and form of this magazine.  It’s quite exciting, and nice to see the support that it is getting.  I had a friend over the other day who was going through lots of stuff with me about what I need to work out and set up. It was fantastic and I realized there is a lot I need to do. Though also a lot I can delegate.

One of the first things I am going to have to do is come up with some guidelines on submissions. They will be available in the magazine, and will also be sent to people who want to write for it.

Another thing that seems to keep coming up is charging a fee for the magazine, my husband thinks I should stop doing so much for free and start charging and that I should charge for the magazine, even if it is a nominal fee. Other people have said exactly the same, that I should charge for scfalls-0002bwit.  I guess my reluctance comes because people just don’t want to pay for anything anymore. So, I thought I would see what you all thought. I’m going to include a poll, or two.  I just need to see what people think.

Photos today

I went out to take photos today of some waterfalls, but it was raining so much that we didn’t take any, well except with my phone.  It was a place I’ve never been to before, but we know we will go back.  So for the photos today I went through all my old photos to find some older photos of waterfalls for you.

  1. Thanks for the polls and asking our opinion! It seems my opinion was in line with the majority.

    • You’re welcome Nancy, I feel like it is a joint thing, and I have included everyone in the decision making process up to now, so why stop, is what I was thinking. I’m glad your opinion was with everyone else’s, seems the idea to charge for the magazine is the most popular.

Leanne, charge a nominal fee…I don’t think that would put too many people off

    May 12, 2015
    • Thank you Sue, that is pretty much what my husband said as well. Hopefully it won’t.

  4. Beautiful as always!

  5. Great collections of waterfalls! Looks like a fee for the magazine is a no brainer😊

    • So it would seem Chris, it is great to get that confirmation. Thank you.

  7. I think your should definitely charge for the magazine, Leanne! I need to move Australia, so I can go on your photography class outings! They sound like such fun 🙂 beautiful waterfall pics!

    May 12, 2015
    • Thank you Kirsten, it seems to be a popular choice or action, so I think I will, it would be good to get some money to pay people like my daughter for editing, pay for software, that sort of thing. I wish you could too, we would have so much fun, it would be a hoot and a half. You might just have to come for a visit. 😀 Thanks Kirsten.

  8. Hey Leanne, you have been feasting us with some great images; you deserve to claw back something for your time. I would say start at the very minimum for your magazine subscription. Then, later on you can up the ante depending on response. It is better to have 500 people paying .99 cent than 50 people paying $5.00. You do not want people to assume you are only doing a magazine for the money. Just a thought my friend.

    • Thank you Noel, I think that is what my husband is thinking as well. That is good advice, thanks will keep that in mind. No not at all, I think this will be very good for women’s photography, at least I hope it is, and hopefully will show that we do do more than portraits and weddings.

  10. It’s too bad that the rain kept you from getting any new waterfall pictures. But the “old” ones (oldies but goodies — ha, ha!) you posted are stunning. They are so lush and gorgeous, I feel as if I can hear the water tumbling over the rocks.

    May 12, 2015
    • It was a pity, but am hoping to get back there next week, so maybe some new ones then. Thank you, glad you like the old ones.

      May 12, 2015
  11. Love the misty waterfalls. So surreal.

    May 12, 2015
    • Thank you, I need to get out and do more I think.

  12. Leanne, I am just so excited for you with all your new ventures. Gorgous photographs all of which I totally enjoyed. About gardens. Scratch that idea because they are very time consuming, a lot of physical work, and you have to learn a lot of knowledge regarding gardening and how best to plant which plants how and where. There is the insect and protection aspect of gardening. There is before that what one must do to make a garden bed with a tiller to make sure the soil is turned over and very loose, then adding more topsoil as well. You have to learn how to fertilize and which plants like what fertilizers. How to prune and when to prune. You have SO much on your plate now as it is, I really suggest you think of places to go to use your macro. I am absolutely in LOVE with mine and the abilty to create has sky rocketed. Again, I really wish you all the best. I would definitely be interested in submitting my work to be seen in your magazine. It would be a real honor and a real thrill. (smile) Now, since I am falling asleep writing this comment, I am closing. LOL Take care, my friend. Love, Amy ❤

    May 12, 2015
    • Thank you Amy, it is exciting and scary. Haha, I just want some flowers, though I’m not good at maintenance, so I just plant things that will just look after themselves, that’s what happens in nature, afterall. Thanks for the advice, and lovely to hear from. I absolutely love my macro too, I’ve been taking it down to the local park to see what I can get. I will take it with me when I go to the waterfalls to see what I can get. We are thinking of having like a readers gallery or something like that, so stay tuned.

      May 12, 2015
      • I will stay tuned, thank you, Leanne. I was off from blogging for a while as I was reopening all my gardens. But I am back now! I am having so much FUN with my macro lens and not just for macro images either. LOL

        May 13, 2015
      • That is wonderful Amy, the macro is such a good lens. I love mine, I think I already said that, haha. Glad you are back, lovely to hear from you as well.

  13. Those waterfalls are brilliant! Great idea to do a poll. Exciting about the new mag.

    May 12, 2015
    • Thank you Nicci, seemed a good way to gauge what people might be thinking.

      May 12, 2015
  14. Vivian here. I think it should be free to start, then charge later after you have a following.

    May 12, 2015
    • Lots of people have said if you offer it for free and then start to charge then people won’t want it anymore, so I am going to start by charging, even if it is only a small amount. Thanks Vivian 😉

      May 12, 2015
  15. I’m all up for paying a small subscription fee to the magazine. Lots of effort is going into the magazine, and I’m sure people will be willing to pay for good content. You’re really very nice to be thinking of doing and sharing all this for free, like how you do with your blog 🙂

The weather has been a bit crazy lately, have to agree with you. Cold and wet. Luckily it wasn’t that wet one day on the weekend in the city. Great set of waterfall photos, even if they are from the archives. Love your work as usual 🙂

    May 12, 2015
    • I hope so Mabel, time will tell. It has been good to hear that generally people don’t mind pay a small fee. A few friends and people I know who’ve given me advice have said just charge for it, so will see.
It has been crazy, can’t believe snow tomorrow, I am going to be staying home I think, with the heater close by. It looks set to be beautiful this coming weekend, I hope anyway. Thank you, I really want to do more waterfalls. 🙂

  16. For once I’m with the majority! Great pics Leanne

Waterfalls are amazing to take pictures, I so wanna get back to take some cool waterfall pictures, or at least to try 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!

    May 13, 2015
    • I agree, I love photographing them, I hope you get to soon as well. You’re welcome and thank you.

      May 13, 2015
  19. Stunning capture

  20. I’m with the majority and think you should get paid for your work. If you feel funny about asking for direct payment, maybe you could get some advertising to help with the costs. You have a very clearly defined target market which could make Dynamic Range an attractive venue for certain advertisers.

On the slightly tacky side, I assume your price would be in Australian dollars? (as opposed to American, Hong Kong, etc.)?

    May 13, 2015
    • Thank you John, at this point it isn’t so much me getting paid for my time, but making sure others do. My daughter is going to edit the magazine and it would be good if she got paid. Then there is the software to do the magazine, it has to be paid for. Stuff like that. Hopefully somewhere down the track I will also get paid. I thought about advertising, but I think we will have to prove ourselves first before we get taken seriously. I agree, we have a definite target market.

I always forget about that, I often charge US dollars, makes it easier it seems.

Breathtaking scenery!! I wish I could go with you and visit those falls.

    May 14, 2015
    • Maybe one day Di’, there are three different ones there, all fantastic. Thank you.

  22. Lovely waterfalls – I wish we had some (one would do!) somewhere vaguely near where I live 😦

    June 2, 2015
    • That’s sad, I love that we have so many around us. Thank you.
