Quiet Thursday: Taking it Easy

The weather looked like it could be a total washout this week for my trip to Apollo Bay with Karen from daysandmonths, but we have been very lucky. It has been overcast and there has been rain, but there has been some lovely light too. I hope Karen is enjoying herself and getting some great photos. I know I am, on both counts, and have loved being here with her.

It isn’t the only place I’ve been this week and I have some photos for you now of one or two other places.  I told you I was going into the country areas on Friday with Chris and Chris, and it was another one of those days, first we saw fog, then it rained, then from no where the sun came out. It was great.  No idea where we ended up, but they were nice.  Hopefully we can find them again.

These two images were taken on that day and I have processed them.

I did a couple of photos last night from yesterday.

The first image was taken at Cape Otway. It was a dark sky, and made some moody shots. The second image was taken at night near where we are staying. We had hoped to do the milky way and a clear night sky earlier. Of course by the time we got out there the sky was covered in clouds.  Still, I enjoyed taking some photos of the beach at night.

Next I just have some Instagram photos for you. I keep trying to remember to put some up, but not too many.  I don’t want to drive people nuts with too many photos.  They are from the two trips above and from a trip into the city the other day with Julie from FROG POND FARM. So I will leave it there, need to get ready to show Karen some more of the Great Ocean Road, seems she can’t wait to see the 12 Apostles,I hope she want be disappointed.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Rushing Around

Today I am off to Apollo Bay and I am feeling a bit rushed to try and get everything done before I go. It feels like a race, so please excuse me if I don’t quite get it all done.

Social Snappers

It would seem it is time to give up on doing these. I’ve tried charging one price, then putting it down, doing them for free and then charging a nominal amount, and still nothing. I’ve had a few people doing them here and there, but it isn’t enough to keep wasting my time organizing outings for women and getting no response, or very little. So I have apollo-bay-sunrise-harbour-boats-5made the decision that I am going to stop doing them. If they were slowly growing, it would be one thing, but I’ve never really had more than three or four ladies come, but that never happened.

Dynamic Range Magazine

All the articles are in and editing has been happening and getting them ready for the publication. It is getting quite stressful, now I have to do it and I still not sure what I am doing.  I am learning a lot though.

Thank you to everyone who went and took a look at my website last week. I’m still working on it, but I have also been doing more work on the blog and posting there again. I think I have worked out what I want to do with it, and hopefully will be posting on it more.  Here is the link to the website again, Leanne Cole.

Digital Photography School

I have had another article published on Digital Photography School. This one is about Fine Art Photography and I would invite you to please go and take a look and share it on your apollo-bay-sunrise-harbour-craypots-1social media. Here is the link to it, What is Fine Art Photography and How to Do it?

I have to get ready to go away and am just going to leave it there. No idea what we are going to find in Apollo Bay, but it is going to be very cold.  I thought I would post photos from my last trip there. The weather was nice, don’t think we are going to be as lucky this time.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Getting Ready for Time Away

It seems I’m doing the same thing as before, going out too much to take photos and not spending nearly enough time at home. I have decided to just enjoy it for the next week and a bit and then get things organized again.

Dynamic Range Magazine

I’ve been spending a bit of time looking at other photography magazines and working out what it is that I want this one to be about. I am thinking about you all and what you have said you would like. It is an interesting thing to examine.

Articles have been coming in and it is exciting to think that it is really coming together. Hopefully it will be ready and 20110707-untitled-5230available for you to purchase at the end of the month.

I have to get to this and start working out what images I want to be in it. I have hundreds of photos so I need to cull them down, should be great looking through them all and working out which ones.

Online Classes

I just want to remind you that I do offer online classes if you want to learn photography or learn how to use Lightroom 20100529-untitled-4700or Photoshop.  So if you are interested take a look at my website.

Apollo bay

Next week I am off to Apollo Bay with Kaz. I am sure it is going to be a great week, if not quite exhausting. Kaz wants to do everything and with only four days there I’m not sure how we will go, but we will do our best. It is such a beautiful part of Victoria and you get a different feel no matter where you go up the road. There are beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, lighthouses and Koalas. It is going to be great, cold, but great. I just hope the weather behaves.

Speaking of the weather we are having a very cold winter here this year. Well I think it is. It is about time really as the last few have been quite mild. I thought it might be fun today to go through my archives and find some winter photos. Some of these I’ve never shown here before, I don’t think.20100515-untitled-1784

I went for a day trip up to the snow a few years ago and took some photos and it was so amazing. It was really the first time I had seen snow like this in Australia. I had seen it overseas, but not here.

There are also some more photos of fog and such, cold mornings.

It is time for me to get busy and get some work done.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: More Opportunities

Things are seemingly to be moving in fast motion around me and whizzing past, but I feel like I’m in slow motion, straining to keep up. It is a weird feeling. I know I can keep up and the key is going to be staying on top of everything. I’m sure I can do it.

Weekend Notes

I don’t know if many of you have heard of this or if it is more a Melbourne or Australian thing, but it is a great place to get information on events or places to go.  I have just started writing for them and just had my first article published.  I scpointlonsdale-hpm7810-2wrote it on waterfalls around the back of Lorne, surprisingly it is called Waterfalls Around Lorne. I was there on the weekend and got some great photos of the waterfalls.

They are more a subscription based thing and you subscribe and get emails about what is happening. I think they are hoping to go the wider community. If you want to visit the site, go to Weekend Notes.

Pro Blogger Podcast

The guy behind Pro Blogger and the Digital Photography School is doing some podcasts to help people work out how scpointlonsdale-hpm7850-3to blog. You can find the introduction to it here ProBlogger Podcast: Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging.

Basically he is going to start a challenge for people starting on the 1st of July and will go for 30 days. Might be interesting to see how it goes and if it helps get your blog some more coverage. I am going to try it for my other blog, which I haven’t done anything on for a while. Hopefully I will have the time.

Digital Photography School

I’ve had another article published on the Digital Photography School. It is one that I sort of hinted at recently on Time scpointlonsdale-hpm7925-1Lapse Photography and I have written a tutorial on how I did it for dPs. Here is the link to it, How to Shoot and Process a Time Lapse Movie – Quick Method. It is a very quick way of doing it and I hope those of you that wanted to know how to do it will find it useful.

I also believe that today another tutorial I’ve written is coming out and when I know I will add a link. This one is on Watermarks, quite an extensive tutorial on a number of ways of adding watermarks to your images using Lightroom and Photoshop.  I hope you like it.

It has now been published and  you can find it here, How to Watermark Your Images Using Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

Meeting Up with People

In a couple of weeks I’m really excited that I will be meeting Kaz from daysandmonths. She is coming down to scpointlonsdale-hpm7805-2Melbourne and we are going to go to Apollo Bay for a few days to take some photos. Then we will be back in Melbourne to do some night photography and some other things. I’m sure we are going to run out of time, too much to do, it is going to be great.

Speaking of meeting people, there are plans for a bit of a WordPress Meet Up next year here in Australia, not in Melbourne, but in Sydney. We don’t know when yet, but we are starting the conversation now. One suggestion has been June next year.  This is for anyone who wants to come. Could be a great event. So don’t be shy, start saving and come and meet us.

Today I have some photos that were taken almost three years ago on a couple of trips to Point Lonsdale. Lovely lighthouse there.  I hope you are having a great time, maybe not as busy as mine.  Take care.

Weekend Wanderings: Tree Tops at Apollo Bay

In a couple of months I’m going to Apollo Bay for a few days.  I’m looking forward to it, but it also reminds me of the trip I had there last year and there was one excursion that I never showed any photos of, well except for a couple of special ones. We had gone to the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures and went to do the Treetop Walk. It was quite an amazing walk. Lovely to walk above the rainforest.

There is the path, up there in the sky.  It is not for the faint hearted, and I think if you were not good with heights it wouldn’t be good to go.  It is very solid, but you can see straight through the bottom and every time someone moves the whole platform shakes.  We were lucky and for the most part it was just the two of us on it.

This was probably one of the scariest parts.  It is on the platform and then you climb even higher.  It sways, you can feel it swaying, but you have to believe that it is solid and you won’t fall off it.  The views up there were quite amazing.

You really are up in the treetops.

The views straight down were quite surreal too. It isn’t often you get to see the trees from the top down.

Rainforests are so pretty and everywhere you look you find something new to photograph.

This image was one that as I was trying to get it I realised how much I wanted a macro lens.  They were so tiny, and my lens just wasn’t getting what I wanted.  This image has been cropped a lot.

It is a lovely place to go, but be aware, you go a long way down to get to the platform to take you around, and then you have to walk all the way back up.  It was worth it though.  You do have to pay money to do it, but you have to do that for a lot of things these days.

I have more photos for you now, which I will put into a gallery for you.  I am off for more photography with the filters again this morning. I hope you are having a lovely weekend where ever you are in the world.

Quiet Thursday’s – In Fall Colour

It is very quiet here, we have used up our monthly allowance for the internet and we have been put onto a very slow speed, so using the internet has become very slow and pretty boring.  I am not sure how we will make it through to next week, it is funny how super reliant you become on the internet.  So today, I don’t want to talk much.  I thought I might show last weeks MM image in colour, and yesterdays.

The rainforest image.  I don’t mind it in either monochrome or black and white, you might have to go back a week to see the monochrome version.  I like that you can see the green and lushness of the forest, but it doesn’t take over either.  I don’t know, does it still have the same impact?

It is the same image, I did the black and white in Adobe Camera Raw, so because it was a smart object I could just go back and make it colour again.  I do love these waves, or waves like this.  I don’t know that this one is that good in colour, perhaps because of the sand, and the beautiful colour of the water above it.

I was mucking around with this one yesterday.  It has also been cropped a lot.  The hard part was making it so that the rocks didn’t take over and become the point of focus.  I hope I have succeeded in making them less important.

I do like what happened with the waves, I do want to try it again, but I am worried that since it happened accidentally that I won’t be able to make it happen again.  It is a long way to go to the coast to fail.  I will just have to prepared for both outcomes.  It is always good not to have really set ideas of what you want to get, you can really set yourself up for disappointment then.

I’m going to put the photos into a gallery now so you can see them better.  Hopefully this post won’t take all day to publish.

Weekend Wanderings – Apollo Bay Part 2

One of the plans we had had for Apollo Bay was to go to a particular area to take photos of the night skies, but with fog rolling in each day we were there it didn’t seem possible.  Photographing the sunrise also seemed like it would be impossible and so we headed out very early thinking we would photograph the harbour surrounded by fog, but as we got to the harbour we were confronted with something else.

The most glorious sunrise.  It was completely unexpected, and the colours were just amazing.  So it wasn’t quite this brilliant, and there is a fair bit of creative license here.

apollo-bay-sunrise-harbour-boats-1This was more the start of it, but you have to have a good shot to start with don’t you?  It just kept getting better and better.

I also had a play with my neutral density filter.  For those that read my other blog from my website will know how much trouble I have had trying to work that out.  It was good to get it working and to get some shots I could actually use.  I tried not to get too carried away with it.

The following morning we headed out again, hoping for another great sunrise, but it wasn’t too be.  There was one, but there weren’t enough clouds, so we didn’t get those brilliant colours.  We picked an area of beach with lots of rocks, and the water was making some great patterns in the sand.

I just kept looking for them, I really liked them so much, and as I’m sure you have guessed there will be so many more in the gallery, well a few more.

Apollo Bay was great, none of the plans we had really worked out, and we had to rethink some things.  The weather, while fantastic, wasn’t really great for photography, so decided to do what Moose Peterson says to do and we scouted out places that we can go back too.  That doesn’t mean we didn’t take photos, but they weren’t all great.  Apollo Bay is a lot closer to Melbourne than I thought, with it being just over 2 and half hours away, it is a place that I can go to on a fairly regular basis.  The one thing we realised while we were there was that there are so many great places around there to take photos, and instead of trying to work out what to photograph, it became more about what we would leave until the next time. There really was too much to do.

I just want to give a nod to the place we stayed, Beeches by the Sea. The price was great, and we were a bit worried, but it was fantastic, it was so clean, and the sheets on the beds were like silk. I loved the beds. So if you are going to Apollo Bay, give them a call and see if they have any places available.  We had the 2 bedroom unit and it was perfect for us.  The little surprises left for us was a great touch as well, so thank you.

I am going to put some more sunrise photos in a gallery for you.  I still have lots of others, but not sure when I will show those.  It was great to come away from a couple of days away with so many photos.  So many that I don’t know what to do with them all. Hope your weekend is going well.
