It’s been a funny time

It seems I’m a bit all over the place at the moment. The blog is taking a bit of a back seat and while I don’t mean it too, I am finding myself distracted by other things. So let’s have an update and see what is happening.

Banyule Flats Book

Things are coming to a head with it and I feel like we are on the run to the finish line. I don’t have a date for completion, some things that are out of my control have happened, but I continue on and get it as close to completion as I can. We have a layout, we just need to work on that now.

So, right now I don’t know when the book will be published, but hopefully you and I won’t have to wait too long.

Dynamic Range Magazine

I’m also very busy getting the next issue of the magazine ready. I realised the other day that the magazine has been a reality for over 12 months now. The idea was conceived about this time last year. Took a while to get the first issue out, but we did. Now we are getting the fourth issue ready to publish.

Writers Wanted and Ideas for Articles

We just wanted to let you know that we are always looking for writers. There are guidelines on my website, or here is the link. Not everyone can write for a magazine, but if you are happy to work with us, we are happy to work with you. That might mean that you have to rewrite your article several times, but we want the best we can get from you.

We are always looking for suggestions too, so if you have any ideas for articles, then let us know as well. You can send your ideas to

Changes to the Blog

I’m thinking of making some more changes to this blog. Time is short and I’m finding the Introduction posts hard to do. I have trouble finding people sometimes, so we might just do them once a month.

I think I want to do more on my other blog, the one on my website. I like the idea of sharing ideas and my artwork with you there. It has been great to see lots of you over there, so please keep going. The rest of you, would love to see you there as well.

I might even start doing monochrome madness over there. I don’t know at this stage. I have more space and more control over on that blog. Someone here said recently that they are getting sick of all the changes that Automatic are doing and I have to say I am too. You never know what you will wake up to.

So please, if you like my work and like what I do please consider subscribing here.

Last weekend I spent Sunday night teaching someone how to use a DSLR. They had never had one before, so it was all new. Still good fun, which leads me to the photos for this article.

The photos were taken in the city last week. We started late in the afternoon and we went until it was dark. We spent our time along the river, which is always a great place for photos, especially at night.

All images were taken with the Nikon 28-300mm lens.

Getting the Magazine Out There

It has been a very crazy week and most of it has been taken up with trying to get this magazine out and get people to buy it, support it.

One of my images that are in my article on Long Exposure Photography

The main problem has been the products page and it not displaying the images correctly. I am sure many have gone to the page and been confused about what to do. I’ve put a note to help, but I know that many people, me included, don’t always read instructions.

We have decided that the best way to do this is to try using a different ecommerce plugin. There is now a shop page at the top, you can click here for it.

It seems to work okay, except you have to give it a lot of information. I don’t have access to this information, but I will try and find out how to stop it.  Though I suspect you only have to do it once. I’m not sure, we are still trying to work it out. It would be great if people could try it out and see how they go.

This is still all new and I’m so glad that many of you have supported us and continued to buy the magazine.

So now taking some advice from Melissa and her article on Marketing in the latest issue:

Bits and Bobs Starts for 2016

What is that saying, “there’s no time like the present to start things”, or something along those lines.  I guess I should get back into what I’ve been doing.

Dynamic Range Magazine

This is such a big part of my life now. I am learning so much from doing it. Who knew that I would be able to put together a magazine like this.Every time I look at it and see how it looks, and reads, I am amazed.warburton-lalafalls-rain-forest-macro-123

It has been wonderful to find so many people who have wanted to help out with it, but also because they feel passionate about the cause as well. It is nice to know that I am not alone and that many women do feel they get a raw deal in the photography industry.

We are getting ready for the third issue now and the articles are starting to come in. We have a bigger variety of them this time. I’ve been busy writing one on Long Exposure Photography, sort of a beginners guide to what it is. It is fun trying to put what you know into words.

Now if you have purchased the last issue and want to put some photos in for the Reader’s Gallery then take a look at the instructions in the magazine. Also, the same for the chance to win the Lowepro bag.

warburton-lalafalls-rain-forest-macro-121So I hope you will continue to support the magazine and buy your copy of it. Here is the link again.

Banyule Flats Book

It is all starting to come together. The photos have been edited for five of the six seasons and I’m about to start getting the photos for the last season. I have to say I was really surprised when I started going through the photos. My memory of them was that they were nice, but as I started editing them I was so happy with what I had. I love seeing all them and I am so excited about the book now.

I’ve contacted the Wurundjeri (the traditional owners of the land) now that I have the photos to see if we can get some stories to go with some of them. I think that will really add warburton-lalafalls-rain-forest-macro-146something to the book.

It should all be done in the next couple of months, will let you know when you can buy it and from where.

Digital Photography School

My latest article that I have written for them has been published. It is a tutorial on making landscape planets, or how to turn your landscapes into something that looks like a planet.

How to Make a Little Planet Using Photoshop

Neutral Density Filters

A new ND Filter arrived for me the other day. I got the Formatt Hitech 10 warburton-lalafalls-rain-forest-macro-141stop filter. I know I have the Lee Big Stopper, but the blue colour cast can be a bit annoying sometimes, so I thought I might try the Formatt Hitech one. I have so many of their other filters and have been so happy with them. I’m off today to try it out.

I’m really looking forward to getting out and taking some photos. Should be a nice day along the beach.

The photos for the post today were taken just over a year ago on a trip to Warburton and La La Falls. I had just got my macro lens not long before it so I had a lovely time taking photos of the macro world.  I hope you enjoy seeing some of them again.

Happy New Year

That is it, the end of 2015 and now onto 2016. I’ve learned in the 50 years of my life that nothing ever really goes according to plan and there are always massive ups and massive downs, and some in betweens. I used to be called pessimist, someone close used to say to me ‘you are always so negative’ and I would respond that being like that meant you were never disappointed. It would still happen, but in amongst it are some great things and last year had many of those.

I don’t want to dwell on the year that has been, but thought perhaps I could look at the year ahead and what my plans are. I have no New Years Resolutions, but I do have things I want to do and achieve in the next year.

Book on Banyule Flats

The photos are pretty much sorted, just need some editing and then organized into book form. The woman who is now doing the magazine will be doing that as well.  So it isn’t far away. I’m looking forward to it being finished.

Dynamic Range Magazine

This is where most of my focus is going to be in the year to come. I want to make it as successful as I can. I still think the idea is strong and I know that there are people out there interested in it.

I still can’t believe that I have done this, put together this amazing publication. I have found people to write for it, also people who just think it is a great idea and what to be part of it. I really have to thank all of those who have helped out with it. It is not something I could have done on my own.

I would also like to thank everyone who has purchased it and helped to make it possible. It has been wonderful to get that support.

The next issue is due out in February. We are trying to get the subscription part working so those of you who want to subscribe for the year can.

Another thing that has come up is putting the magazine on the Google store so if you don’t want to pay with PayPal  you can purchase it there as well. I’m still looking into that, but it sounds like a good option.

Social Media

Much of my spare time these days is taken up with learning all I can about Social Media and how to use it for marketing. I am fairly certain it is helping me, but I also need to get it working for the Magazine as well. So 2016 is my year to becoming a social media expert, or wannabe, not really sure yet. I guess we will find out in 12 months.

After my trip, after my most amazing trip, to the US last year I have to admit I would like to do some more travelling. No definite plans yet, but I am hoping to get to Tasmania later in the year. I would also like to go to Venice, and now I have to work out how to make that possible. I might have to look into some grants, or maybe try some crowd funding.

I found the trip to the US had an unexpected effect on me and I really like the way my work is going right now. New York had a much bigger influence than I thought it would.

I am going to be making changes to the blogs. This one will continue with the 3 to 4 posts a week. They will be the Introductions, Monochrome Madness, the post on what I’m up to and one Weekend Wandering post.

On my other blog, on my website I will be doing more posts on my actual images and why I do them. I may do some tutorials, not absolutely sure yet, but the posts will be more about individual images. I have the sticky post at the top of this and in that I put what the latest posts are over there.

It has been great to see many of you going over there and saying hello.

My Photos Today

I have a collection of nine photos. On Instagram you can find out your best nine photos for 2015, and it seems the ones in this post were mine.

Happy New Year, and all the best to you for 2016.

Bits and Bobs Again

city-melbourne-architecture-sights-508Time to round up my week and what I’ve been doing. It might be what you think. I did manage to get away for a couple of days, and the rest well, more of the usual.

Social Media

I seem to be spending a great deal of time learning more and more about how to use it and planning posts and what I can do. It is hard to weed through all the information, but I think I am getting better at all of it.

I’m starting to realize there is a lot more city-melbourne-architecture-sights-505involved than just posting photos. It seems to be all about planning and working out when you want to post things. It is a lot tougher than I hoped. It is teaching me to be organized, which has to be a good thing.

I do hope that with what I am learning I will be able to market Dynamic Range a lot more effectively and maybe myself.

One on One Photography Lessons

I was talking to someone recently and I realized that I might be too cheap city-melbourne-architecture-sights-509and that could be part of the reason why I’m not getting many people. It is picking up, but I have decided to make some changes.

From now on a One on One Photography session with me is going to be for 3 hours and cost $360. The photo editing sessions are now going to be $900 for 5 sessions with me. It isn’t going to hurt to try it. There seems to be a common thing that if you charge too little then people think you don’t know what you are doing. Time will tell.

Don’t forget both issues one and two are still available to purchase.

Trips Away

I was finally able to get away this last week up to my mum’s place in the Mallee. It was nice to be back there, though it was hot and I never like city-melbourne-architecture-sights-522that. We went to Swan Hill to take some photos, but you will have to wait until the weekend to find out more about that.

I am finding my focus is changing. I don’t think that is a bad thing, but my reasons for wanting to go to the Mallee and take photos has changed. I do want to keep going up there, but I think what I take photos of could change. I’m excited about it, I hope you are too.

The photos in the post today were taken 12 months ago and were in a Weekend Wandering post. The images were from a day around the city of Melbourne. I hope you enjoy the look back as much as I do.

As I’ve stated before I’m doing a lot more fine art images over on my other blog, so take a look there as well.

New Blog

If you would like to follow me then please follow this link to my new blog.

Something for Friday

Some decisions have been made recently and one of them is to do my posts on two blogs. This one and the one on my website. I would like the one on my website to become my main blog, and in time I hope everyone will find their way there.

Some other changes are going to happen as well. I plan on cutting down on how often I blog. I think I will go to four times a week, and see how that goes. I need to find some time to do some other things, which I am excited about. My posts on Friday are going to combine my Bits and Bobs post as well as looking at images I have put up on Social Media.

Social Media seems to be a very important aspect for any photographer these days. With that in mind I’ve been trying to use it a lot more and putting more photos on certain platforms. I have been building up Instagram and trying to put one or two photos up there each day. It has been good going through all my older images and seeing what I can put up. I have also worked on some new images. I really like how my Instagram account is looking. I hope you enjoy the new and old photos.

There have been some people who have asked that I show some images of what the inside of the magazine looks like. Here are four samples of pages that can be found in the latest edition. If you haven’t got your copy yet then here is the link.
