Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Getting Ready for Time Away

It seems I’m doing the same thing as before, going out too much to take photos and not spending nearly enough time at home. I have decided to just enjoy it for the next week and a bit and then get things organized again.

Dynamic Range Magazine

I’ve been spending a bit of time looking at other photography magazines and working out what it is that I want this one to be about. I am thinking about you all and what you have said you would like. It is an interesting thing to examine.

Articles have been coming in and it is exciting to think that it is really coming together. Hopefully it will be ready and 20110707-untitled-5230available for you to purchase at the end of the month.

I have to get to this and start working out what images I want to be in it. I have hundreds of photos so I need to cull them down, should be great looking through them all and working out which ones.

Online Classes

I just want to remind you that I do offer online classes if you want to learn photography or learn how to use Lightroom 20100529-untitled-4700or Photoshop.  So if you are interested take a look at my website.

Apollo bay

Next week I am off to Apollo Bay with Kaz. I am sure it is going to be a great week, if not quite exhausting. Kaz wants to do everything and with only four days there I’m not sure how we will go, but we will do our best. It is such a beautiful part of Victoria and you get a different feel no matter where you go up the road. There are beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, lighthouses and Koalas. It is going to be great, cold, but great. I just hope the weather behaves.

Speaking of the weather we are having a very cold winter here this year. Well I think it is. It is about time really as the last few have been quite mild. I thought it might be fun today to go through my archives and find some winter photos. Some of these I’ve never shown here before, I don’t think.20100515-untitled-1784

I went for a day trip up to the snow a few years ago and took some photos and it was so amazing. It was really the first time I had seen snow like this in Australia. I had seen it overseas, but not here.

There are also some more photos of fog and such, cold mornings.

It is time for me to get busy and get some work done.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Slowing Down

Things are slowing slowing down. It is nice to be able to catch my breath.  Easter is a welcome break this year, I’m looking forward to just taking things easy.

Blood moon

According to the app on my phone, “Phases of the Moon”, this Saturday night is going to be another blood moon.  I am so happy that I’ve been lent the 150-600mm Tamron Lens from Maxwell International Australia so I can try it out on the blood moon.  The last one was a disaster here, it was too overcast and we hardly got anything. Unfortunately the forecast is for similar weather this Saturday night, so I might have to do a rethink and go somewhere else.  Not sure where yet, but away from the bad weather.

I really want to do this newsletter, but it is proving to be difficult finding the time, soLeanneCole-lilies-20130901-8377 I am making the decision, at this stage, of instead of doing it every other month, I will work on getting it out every two, so it will be a bi-monthly one.  I hope that is okay with you.

Beep Beep Boop

First of all, I have to say, who on earth thinks of these names or saying? Serioulsy!

I know there are ways of finding the old classic editor, but I decided to give the new one a go. For the last week I’ve been using it, and getting used to it.  It is not as bad as I first thought.  I think they have made the font bigger, or done something so it is bigger on my screen and much easier to see.

I like the aspect that it is closer to what a post actually looks like.  I get a better idea of what the post will look like when it is posted, which is good.  Of course many things have been changed around, and I’m not going to lie, there are things that don’t work.  I hope they scbirds-5hpm4862-5will be fixed.

If you are using the new editor you need to keep an eye on the Advance Settings, for some reason settings that you have set up aren’t working and you have to keep checking boxes, like the “Show Sharing Buttons” and the “Show Likes”. They are things I hope they fix up and have put something in the forums about it.

The other thing I don’t like are the publish and save draft buttons.  Sometimes they change positions, so you can accidentally publish a post before you mean to when what you really wanted to do was just save the draft. They were kept separate in the old one, and I think they should do the same with the new one.

I’m not completely sold on it, but the more I use it, I suppose the more I will get used to it.  Time will tell.

Social Snappers

I have dates and places now, even times.

  • April 19th – 10am Fitzroy Gardens, taking photos of the Autumn colours.
  • May 3rd – 6.30am Early morning in the city, taking photos along the Yarra River
  • May 17th – 1.30pm Royal Exhibition Building, photographing outside and hopefully get a tour as well
  • May 31st – 1pm Cranbourne Botanical Gardens
  • June 14th – 12.30pm Werribee Zoo

As I said, they will be free this term, see how we go with them.  I am also going to see about doing some classes on some things at some stage as well.

Online Classes with Mescroses-8787-3

I am thinking of offering different Online classes.  I know that not everyone wants up to 5 sessions, so maybe I can offer just a couple of individual ones, or some longer ones.  I could specific classes to show people something specific that I do or they want to learn.  I would like to know what people would be interested in.  Though I guess I may have to accept that it isn’t what people want from me.

Since we’ve been looking at lots of flowers I decided to go through my archives today and see what old photo of flowers I have.  Funny really, they look so boring after yesterday.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Trying New Things

I am trying to get ahead of things this week.  It is good, now that I have decided to write more, I need to make sure I have time for that.

Tamron SP 150-600mm

As I mentioned last week the lens has arrived from Maxwell International Australia.  It is huge, and heavy, but not really that much heavier than the Sigma 150-500mm.  I took it to the zoo the other day to try it out.  I found it good to use, and loved how close I could get to the animals with it. melbourne-zoo-animals-birds-0039When I got the images onto the computer I thought they were so clear.  Whenever I’ve used the Sigma lens I’ve always been a little disappointed.  Though to be fair to Sigma, their lens is older, and could have improved since then.  I also haven’t tried the Sigma 150-600mm.

All the photos in this post were taken with the Tamron lens.  I have processed them a little, not much, and except for the gorillas, I haven’t cropped them as I wanted you to be able to see what I could get. Keep in mind that it is a zoo and you do get quite good access, or get close enough to take photos.

The RRP in Australia for the lens is $1399, so not too bad.  I have no idea how much it costs in other countries, though knowing what things cost here, I am sure it is cheaper overseas.  Maxwell’s sent me a brochure for you to check out, click here to see it. You can also check out the Tamron website for the Tamron SP 150-600mm Lens.

I have the lens for about a month, so I will continue trying it out.  I’m looking forward to trying it out on the birds at Banyule Flats.

Book on Banyule Flats

I am making plans and actually went down to Banyule Flats the other morning to take some photos. It was wonderful.  It was cold and there was a mist over the swamp, so it gave it a lovely atmosphere.  The sunrise wasn’t that impressive, but the mist made up for it.  I melbourne-zoo-gorillas-1033am going to be going down there a lot over the next few months, and the plan is to go down there at least once a week.  Get on with getting lots and lots more images for my book.  I will, of course, be trying them out on your first.

Online Courses or Learning from Me

I have had someone else sign up for some classes online, which is great.  This time it is going to be focused more on photo editing.  So something different again.  I am excited about doing there.  Remember if you would like to learn from me you can get information from my website on Online classes.

I have other things available to, like the One on One photography sessions, so please check them out.

Digital Photography School

I have submitted an article for the Digital Photography School (dps) and if everything goes well then it will be published next week. It still has to be edited, and they might think it isn’t good enough, but I do hope you will all go and look for it if it is published, and maybe leave some comments, well one each would be enough.  I would love to do more of this sort of thing.

melbourne-zoo-animals-birds-0044It seems the problems I was having with doing videos for the newsletter has been sorted out and hopefully this next newsletter I can add more to it than the last one. If you want to get the newsletter then you can sign up here for it here. I want to start doing more instructions and giving advise on how I do my photography.

SITHOM Exhibition

This SITHOM exhibition starts this week.  The exhibition is of Street Photography in Melbourne, though not limited to just photos of people, which is nice.  I have 4 images going into it.

If you would like to see the exhibition it here are the details of when it is on, Thursday, 19 – Monday, 30 March, 2015,Weekdays:  10am – 4pm   Weekends:  1pm – 4pm.

The opening night is Friday at 7pm, so come along and check out the images, should be a great exhibition.

The exhibition is being held at the Victorian Artists Society, 430 Albert Street, East Melbourne VIC 3002.

See you there.

That is enough for this week.  As I said earlier, the photos were all taken with the Tamron lens at the Royal Melbourne Zoo.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: The Planning Continues

It does seem like this year is all over the place, that I have my fingers in so many pies hoping that one of them will pay off and be fantastic for me, a great opportunity that leads to other things.  It is a bizarre world we live in.  I’m not complaining, okay maybe a little, but I guess the main thing is that I am still trying to get me and my photography out there.  I guess I hope that persistence will pay off eventually.

Behind the Scenes

scpi-h20120512-0765I was sent a request recently, and while I didn’t have time to do it, I thought I would mention it and Jasmine here.  This is what it is:

I’ve basically started a link up for photography bloggers to show their behind the scenes. The post does not have to be primarily behind the scenes, it can be your interpretation. All you have to do is add your link to your post by clicking the blue button at the bottom of this post: Behind the Scenes and comment on the post before yours with constructive feedback or a friendly compliment, and the next person will do the same to yours.

If you are interested in taking a look the link is there.

Individual Online Classes

I received another student to do some learning online the other day.  It is fun doing them as each student comes to me with different problems, or different things they want to learn so it is very varied, it is something I really enjoy doing.  I have my new computer all set up and got to use my new webcam today for a session with a student.  If you are interested in learning photography or photo editing from me check out my page on Online Classes.

My Book

I have had a meeting with Banyule Council about my book and the direction it should go in.  We are going to look at seasons and how the land looks through the seasons.  It is very exciting and I’m very keen to get down to Banyule Flats and start doing some photos again.

scpi-HDR20120512-1250Maxwell International Australia are lending me a Tamron 150-600mm lens to try out and review. It will be good to take it to the flats and photograph some birds.  Nice to see how it handles it.

Other Books

It has been suggested that I should consider doing an art book of my fine art images.  I wondered what you thought of that, if you would like to see me produce a book on my special images.

I was also toying with the idea of writing a book on taking photos, my way of course, but not sure about that yet.

I think I like the idea of writing as well.  Though with everything else who knows.

Social Snappers

I’ve been thinking about doing the Social Snappers for free and then adding some extra classes for people to do.  I am finding that I am having trouble getting people to do them, and I am sure that part of the reason is because I don’t have a network of people who know me here, so maybe if I scpi-20120512-1257do them for free, then people might do my other classes.  I thought I would try it for a term and see what happens.

Today the photos are from my old cycling days, well when I used to photograph cycling.  I was taking photos at an event down on Phillip Island, so some of the photos are of the grand prix track down there while others are from one of the points on the island.  Not sure about them now, but it is fun to go back and look at them.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Catching Up

Slowly but surely I am starting to catch up with everything.  Things are starting to take shape and I can start planning some new things.

The Newsletter finally went out yesterday.  Sorry, it took me so long to get it out.  I will make sure that doesn’t happen again. I had problems with my computer and I couldn’t do any tutorials, but hopefully that will be fixed for next time.

Online Classes

I just want to mention them again as I have just had one person sign up, so it reminded me that others might be interested.  They are a great way to get individual tuition.  I charge $350 for five claripponleal-20131011-8938sses and they last for an hour to two hours, depending on how we go.  We can look at camera skills or photo editing.  It will really be directed by you.

I have decided to start writing some better articles for the Up for Discussion posts.  I want to get better at writing and I need to experiment with you guys, so I am hoping to start writing better articles on photography for you.  It is a direction that I think I would really like to go.  Especially since teaching is so much harder than I thought it would be.  So look out, hoping to do my first this Friday, one on Tripods.

Social Snappers

I’m also thinking about making some changes to Social Snappers and perhaps expanding it to something else as well.  I have been trying to advertise it  here in Melbourne, but it has been great, people are looking at the excursions but not doing them.  I enjoy them so much so I want to see what I can dripponleal-20131011-8846o to get more people to come to them.

I also want to start offering some Social Snapper one off classes, like teaching night photography in the city, or doing a class down the coast on photographing the milky way.  Doing editing classes.  Make it a more complete thing, rather than just going out and taking photos, but offering more as well.

I will announce more soon.

Trip to the USA

ripponleal-20131011-8917No more word yet, it looks likely I will be there early in September.  I don’t know what it will be like there. I suspect I will miss the fall colours, too soon, but we can hope for a mild summer and an early Autumn.

Today I went back into the archives to look for photos.  I found some that I remember taking, it was of Ripponlea.  I loved going there, it is such a beautiful building, but it is the gardens that are lovely.

I’m off now, I will be out getting more photos today.  I feel like I am doing it all the time at the moment, it is wonderful.  I hope you have a good day.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Getting Things Done

Today I wanted to talk more about what I need to get done, as really the new year has been slow and I need to start getting on with things.  Time seems to be getting away from me, so I do have to be stricter with myself.  I need to stop wasting time on other things. The things I am trying to get organised the most are the classes, so much of my time has been spent getting those ready to start advertisig.

Classes in the Mallee

I really want to get going with classes.  I have classes in the Mallee organised for the long weekend in March, the 7th, 8th and 9th of March.  I am going to be teaching more about organising your photos and some basic editing using Lightroom.  We will go and take photos first though, that is always fun.  I am going to be doing this class twice, in Swan Hill on the 7th and then in Hopetoun on the 9th.  I need to get some posters done and will work on those this week.

For those that missed the Getting your Camera off Auto, I am running that class again in Hopetoun on the 8th.shepparton-country-dookie-paddocks-135

If you are interested in doing any of these classes please let me know.

Classes in the City

I am still trying to organise a place to teach editing here in Melbourne.  At this stage I am looking at classes in or around Heidelberg.  I want to start doing teaching classes in Photo editing and would like to do both Lightroom and Photoshop.  At this stage I am looking at 4 week courses, and they would be one night a week, well one night for Lightroom and another for Photoshop.  At this stage I am thinking the cost will be $260 for the 4 week course and their will be a maximum of 10 people per class.  People will need to bring their laptops and have the software on them.  I am hoping that won’t be a problem, most people seem to have laptops these days, and that is what they work on.

I also want to see if I can take peoplescyarra-2243 through more beginners things with Photoshop.  I found when I was learning that there were lots of classes for beginners and not a lot for beyond that, if any, so I had to learn on my own.  I want to be able to offer people that option of having somewhere else to go to learn beyond the basics.  I feel like my tagline should be “what I don’t know,  I know how to find out”.

Again if you are interested in doing one of these, please let me know.

Classes Online

Another option is running classes online.  I could do something on Google+ with a small number of people, maybe 8, where I can show you how to do things on my computer and you can see what can be done, ask me questions that sort of thing.  I haven’t really looked into this, but if people are interested, I would love to hear from you.

It is coming together, and while I had hoped it would be out this week, next week is looking more of a reality. I hope you don’t mind.

If you missed the posts about the Newsletter, and would like to get it from me, it is free, then send me an email.

Social Snappers

The first Social Snappers Photography Excursions for Women is coming up and if you want to participate in them, then take a look at the site and pick your excursions.

scyarra-HDR2A friend is on holidays at the moment and we have lots of plans for photos, so on top of organising all this I have a lot of trips to plan and do.  It’s going to be quite amazing.  My friend knows lots of places I’ve never been too before, so I am going to be learning about lots of new places.  It is going to be really exciting I think, I can’t wait.  Lots of long exposures too.

Speaking of photos the images today are from two different places and were taken about 3 years or 4 years ago.  I like going through my archives and taking a look at some older images.  Some are of the Yarra River in Warburton and the remaining ones are from Shepparton around the small town of Dookie.  I used to get there a bit for cycling.

I will leave it there now, so remember if you are interested in any of these classes then let me know.

The Usual Friday Bits and Pieces

LeanneCole-pinklakes-6277Giving you a round up of what I have been doing and what I will be doing in the next week or so is something I look forward to now.  I love sharing what I do and with most days taken up with other posts, Friday’s seem to be the only day that I can tell you about this.  I know I push things I’m doing, and I hope you don’t mind. I have had more One on One sessions, and another one coming up, online classes are starting to happen, more photo editing.  I decided to add another day for the Social Snappers as well.  I have a full plate, but I am loving all that is going on.

One on One Photography Sessions

I had another one of these last week with a new client.  It is so wonderful doing these, sharing my knowledge and going out and taking photos with someone.  I was telling a friend the other day that I am a problem solver, I love working out puzzles, and when a new client comes to me I know I am being presented with a new LeanneCole-docklands-20140216-9339challenge.

When people come to me for One on One’s they often have very specific needs, or areas they want to learn, then it is up to me to work out the best way to teach them that or show them how to do what they want.  It is wonderful, I really enjoy that each person wants something different.  If they don’t know, then I have to work out what they need and what they would like to learn.  I have another booked for the coming week, and this will be my first overseas visitor and I am so excited to meet her face to face and to teach her some photography.

One on One Photo Editing

This last week saw me doing another one of these, a new client and a new place.  I have a friend, Teresa,  who has a shop at the moment over in Greensborough and she said I could use her shop for the session.  It worked out really well.  I helped the client with what she wanted to do with her photos.  Again she had specific things that she wanted to use her photos for and I helped her to learn what she needed to do.

LeanneCole-Melbourne-flindersstreet-railbridgeWe might also be running some classes in Eltham, though not really sure yet, and not sure who will be allowed to do them yet.  If you have done one of my classes already then you will probably be given an invitation.

I am offering Online Editing Classes, if people are interested.  Amazing what you can show people using Skype.

Online Photography Classes

I have had my first client, and we have had a couple of sessions on Skype so far.  She seems to be really enjoying it, and like the other individual classes I teach, it is geared to what she wants to learn.  We talk, I show her things, we discuss her photos, the problems she is having, and then I write exercises for her to go out and do. LeanneCole-melbourne-flindersstreet-shopsShe seems to be enjoying it, and I love that I am helping her learn how to become more comfortable with her new camera and lens.

Social Snappers Photography Excursions

These are slowly coming together.  I have excursions for Sundays and Tuesdays in all sorts of places, though might have to change one of them.  When I was in Fitzroy Gardens the other day a woman stopped and asked what we were doing and I started telling her about these.  She sounded so interested and thought they were a great idea.  I think they are.  I know that I much prefer going out with other people to take photos, and I love going to new places.  I really hope I can find lots of other women that feel the same way.  I keep forgetting to tell people that the groups are limited to 8.

Well I entered another one, and the images that are in this post are the ones I entered.  This competition is different to the last one I entered, it is more an art prize. So the aim is to be selected, for the LeanneCole-pinklakes-20140421-6263exhibition, hopefully.  Though it is a top national prize and a lot of people enter.   If I am selected then I will have to get the image printed and framed, ready to be hung in the exhibition.  The exhibition is quite prestigious, so it would be amazing to be accepted for it.

Getting Connected –  Social Media and Branding

I am going to the above event this coming week.  A friend of mine, Christina, who writes a blog called Miss Rosanna, will be talking about social media. She is one of the speakers and I thought it would be great to go and hear her. I have no idea about Marketing and how to get the word out, so at the moment I am trying everything.

I think that is about all the news I have.  It is getting to be busy which is fantastic.  I do love that.  I will put the above images into a gallery for you to enjoy.
