Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Rushing Around

Today I am off to Apollo Bay and I am feeling a bit rushed to try and get everything done before I go. It feels like a race, so please excuse me if I don’t quite get it all done.

Social Snappers

It would seem it is time to give up on doing these. I’ve tried charging one price, then putting it down, doing them for free and then charging a nominal amount, and still nothing. I’ve had a few people doing them here and there, but it isn’t enough to keep wasting my time organizing outings for women and getting no response, or very little. So I have apollo-bay-sunrise-harbour-boats-5made the decision that I am going to stop doing them. If they were slowly growing, it would be one thing, but I’ve never really had more than three or four ladies come, but that never happened.

Dynamic Range Magazine

All the articles are in and editing has been happening and getting them ready for the publication. It is getting quite stressful, now I have to do it and I still not sure what I am doing.  I am learning a lot though.

Thank you to everyone who went and took a look at my website last week. I’m still working on it, but I have also been doing more work on the blog and posting there again. I think I have worked out what I want to do with it, and hopefully will be posting on it more.  Here is the link to the website again, Leanne Cole.

Digital Photography School

I have had another article published on Digital Photography School. This one is about Fine Art Photography and I would invite you to please go and take a look and share it on your apollo-bay-sunrise-harbour-craypots-1social media. Here is the link to it, What is Fine Art Photography and How to Do it?

I have to get ready to go away and am just going to leave it there. No idea what we are going to find in Apollo Bay, but it is going to be very cold.  I thought I would post photos from my last trip there. The weather was nice, don’t think we are going to be as lucky this time.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Things Decided, Things Purchased

It has been a good week, something very exciting and some things more about decisions.  It almost seems like time is racing these days.  I’m in a race and my opponent is the clock.

Planning My Trip to the US

The tickets have been purchased, so it looks like I’m definitely going.  I will be arriving on the 1st of September to San Francisco where I will be staying with a friend, and then after a week I’m to my brother-in-laws.  Very early on the 15th I sccbg-4hpm1337will be catching a flight to New York and will stay there until the 25th of September, then on another plane home.  It is quite exciting, though I have to say I am very scared of LAX, I know silly, but there you have it.

Dynamic Range

I had hoped that the first issue would be released at the end of June, but I’ve decided that the first one should be the end of July, then three months after that the next one. I don’t think I could deal with having to get an issue out as soon as I get back from the US.

I’ve had some artwork done, Julie Powell is a graphic artist and has done the following for us.

I like the first one, a touch of red.  Would love to hear what you think as well.

Camera Bags

I have got another new bag, it is a Lowepro Pro Runner 350 AW II.  It is all black and very compact.  It has quite a bit of room in it and it is the bag I will be using when I go to the US in September.  It fits my camera, and another two or three lenses.  sccbg-1487

There is a spot for my laptop, and my tripod will fit on the front. Actually my tripod doesn’t really fit it, but since I won’t be taking mine to the states, it doesn’t really matter. I am borrowing a small travel one that belongs to a friend for this trip.

It has very firm handles and makes you feel like it is a very safe bag to use. It has a waist band, a thick padded one.  I don’t really like them, but you can remove this one, so if you want it for something particular you can put it on.

I’ve used the bag a couple of times now and it is comfortable to wear and easy to use.  I think it will be the perfect bag for my trip.

Social Snappers

We had a lovely outing at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Cranbourne on Sunday. The weather was meant to be bad, sccbg-1437and it was when we got there, it was bucketing down.  We decided to start with coffee, so we went to the cafe and did that.  The rain stopped and then we had a lovely visit outside.  We managed to get around the whole thing, and I got home before it rained again. Got to meet some new people which was lovely.

I thought today I would show you the photos I took of the gardens last year.  Then when I do the photos from Sunday you can compare them.  I hope you are having good time where you are and have time to do things.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Things Returning

Tuesday is here again, how quickly it comes around.  Things have been happening here, though perhaps I’m still going out and taking too many photos. I know, I can’t help it, but I also have to think it is a good thing, I do need to take photos, but I also need to speed time at home.  I know I keep saying this, and I am getting better. Anyway, let’s see what else has been happening.

Tamron Sp 150-600mm Lens

I knew it was going to happen eventually, then again, I was hoping Maxwell International Australia might forget that I had the lens, but it seems they have decided they do need it back. I was gutted when I heard that. I have been very lucky and got to use it for a while and I’m fairly certain that my next lens will be this one.

banyuleflats-tawny-frogmouth-australia-birds-1025I have loved having it and using it.  It has been great for the birds, not only those around me but in other places as well. The Melbourne Zoo was a brilliant place to try it out. The images I got from there were amazing, I was so happy with them.

So in memory of the lens I thought I would show you a selection of some of the photos that I have taken with the lens.

Travelling to the USA

I haven’t spoken about my trip for a while, but I assure you, as far as I know, it is still on.  I think I will be arriving around the first of September.  Plans are underway and I have started looking at getting some sponsorship for my trip. Maxwell International Australia have said they will lend me some Tamron lenses for the trip, which is great. It will be healesville-sanctuary-australian-birds-animals-1002nice to see how they are on my trip.  I’m hoping to get the 15-30mm and the 28-300mm, which I hear is a great travel lens. I will be well covered with both of those.

I did send an email to Nikon, but haven’t heard anything back from them as yet.  I wondered if they would lend me a camera, maybe something like the D750. Then today I started thinking about a tripod, and wandered if maybe I could get a travel tripod from someone.  Would be nice to get a lend of some gear for the trip.  Time will tell what happens.

Dynamic Range

I’ve received the first article for the magazine, and it seems the putting together of it all is about to start happening. It is exciting.  I’ve been talking to lots of people and getting lots of ideas from them and they’ve been giving me lots of things to think about.  I’m a bit worried I’ve got myself in over my head, but I’m happy to go with the flow, see what happens.

Hopefully things are still on track for the end of June.

I’ve started trying to work out how people can pay for it and download it at the same time. I also need to work out how I can do subscriptions for people, though I don’t want to offer subscriptions until we know how the magazine will go.banyule-flats-egret-bird

One on One Photography Sessions

I’ve been getting more requests from people to do them which has been great. It is nice to do them. They have been happening in lots of interesting places.  I get to take photos in some great spots and the zoo is working out to be a great place for them.

Social Snappers

Well, I’ve been struggling to work out what to do with them. People sign up and don’t show up.  If I charge money no one signs up, so I’m starting to wonder if it is time to give up on them.  The other option is to charge a small amount, like $20 and just have them once a month.  I might do that, but I am only going to do them for one more term and if the results are like they are now, I am not going to continue doing them.  So I will know soon.

I’m going to leave it there for today.  I hope you enjoy the gallery of images taken the Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Weekend Wanderings: Early Morning in the City

A couple of weeks ago I joined some other lovely ladies and we spent the morning taking photos along the Yarra River in Melbourne. The river was calm and clear.  It wasn’t mirror like, but still very nice and we managed to get some lovely reflections in the water along with some great colours.  It was a very peaceful morning.

It was meant to be a Social Snappers Event, but many didn’t show up, so here is what they missed.

It is a busy weekend for me, so I am just going to leave you with the photos today.  My weekend includes lots of photography, and I hope you are going to have a similar weekend.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Planning Some Things

So here we are again and it is Tuesday where I am in the world. It has been a busy week, but also a week where not a lot has happened.  So I don’t know what to talk to you about.

The magazine idea seems to have been well received by everyone, and it looks like it will be going ahead. Hopefully the first issue will be out before the end, I don’t know, June. Then the next one will be about 3 months after that. sccbg-1602So far I have found a couple of other writers, and I guess the next step is working out what to put in it.

I’ve had quite a few people ask me what I think it will be like.  I probably need to write a statement about it, but basically my idea is that the magazine wouldn’t be that different from other photography ones, just that this one will be showcasing women photographers, and all the articles will be by women.  I think it would be nice if men could read the magazine as well and to feel they can get a lot of out it as well.  I want to be able to show that women can do and do do the other types of photography, like landscapes, architecture, macro and the many other types of photography there is.  We want to change the perception that women only do portraits.

We do need a name and I’ve had some suggestions from people emailing me and I asked for suggestions on Facebook.  I got some great suggestions.  A lot had the word woman or women in them, but it isn’t really something I want.  I would like a name that isn’t that direct.  I don’t want to alienate men and make them feel they couldn’t read it.  My favourite was F-Stop, but unfortunately there is a magazine already with that sccbg-4hpm1337name.  I have put together a list and will put them into a poll so everyone can vote, if you could that would be great.

 Social Snappers

The first Social Snappers event is this Sunday, and we are going to Fitzroy Gardens to photograph the autumn colours.  I am hoping it will be stunning. Since I offered them for free, I advertised on Meetups and have had a great response, the outing is almost full. The photos today are from Cranbourne Botanical Gardens that I took a couple of years ago and I thought it might be nice to look at them again since one of the Social Snappers events is to there this term.sccbg-4hpm1311

One of the things I’ve been spending quite a bit of time doing is helping a friend set up her website and blog.  It has been quite an ordeal setting it up as a self hosted blog.  I have one myself, but my husband set it up, so this has been an entirely new experience. Her site is turning out quite well.  It has been a great experience. I think I will leave it there today. As I said in the beginning, a lot is happening, but not really.  Take care, I hope your world is busy too.

With the poll I’ve had to remove a couple of suggestions as they are already magazines.  Sorry, though I am really liking Dynamic Range.

Tuesday’s Bits and Bobs: Slowing Down

Things are slowing slowing down. It is nice to be able to catch my breath.  Easter is a welcome break this year, I’m looking forward to just taking things easy.

Blood moon

According to the app on my phone, “Phases of the Moon”, this Saturday night is going to be another blood moon.  I am so happy that I’ve been lent the 150-600mm Tamron Lens from Maxwell International Australia so I can try it out on the blood moon.  The last one was a disaster here, it was too overcast and we hardly got anything. Unfortunately the forecast is for similar weather this Saturday night, so I might have to do a rethink and go somewhere else.  Not sure where yet, but away from the bad weather.

I really want to do this newsletter, but it is proving to be difficult finding the time, soLeanneCole-lilies-20130901-8377 I am making the decision, at this stage, of instead of doing it every other month, I will work on getting it out every two, so it will be a bi-monthly one.  I hope that is okay with you.

Beep Beep Boop

First of all, I have to say, who on earth thinks of these names or saying? Serioulsy!

I know there are ways of finding the old classic editor, but I decided to give the new one a go. For the last week I’ve been using it, and getting used to it.  It is not as bad as I first thought.  I think they have made the font bigger, or done something so it is bigger on my screen and much easier to see.

I like the aspect that it is closer to what a post actually looks like.  I get a better idea of what the post will look like when it is posted, which is good.  Of course many things have been changed around, and I’m not going to lie, there are things that don’t work.  I hope they scbirds-5hpm4862-5will be fixed.

If you are using the new editor you need to keep an eye on the Advance Settings, for some reason settings that you have set up aren’t working and you have to keep checking boxes, like the “Show Sharing Buttons” and the “Show Likes”. They are things I hope they fix up and have put something in the forums about it.

The other thing I don’t like are the publish and save draft buttons.  Sometimes they change positions, so you can accidentally publish a post before you mean to when what you really wanted to do was just save the draft. They were kept separate in the old one, and I think they should do the same with the new one.

I’m not completely sold on it, but the more I use it, I suppose the more I will get used to it.  Time will tell.

Social Snappers

I have dates and places now, even times.

  • April 19th – 10am Fitzroy Gardens, taking photos of the Autumn colours.
  • May 3rd – 6.30am Early morning in the city, taking photos along the Yarra River
  • May 17th – 1.30pm Royal Exhibition Building, photographing outside and hopefully get a tour as well
  • May 31st – 1pm Cranbourne Botanical Gardens
  • June 14th – 12.30pm Werribee Zoo

As I said, they will be free this term, see how we go with them.  I am also going to see about doing some classes on some things at some stage as well.

Online Classes with Mescroses-8787-3

I am thinking of offering different Online classes.  I know that not everyone wants up to 5 sessions, so maybe I can offer just a couple of individual ones, or some longer ones.  I could specific classes to show people something specific that I do or they want to learn.  I would like to know what people would be interested in.  Though I guess I may have to accept that it isn’t what people want from me.

Since we’ve been looking at lots of flowers I decided to go through my archives today and see what old photo of flowers I have.  Funny really, they look so boring after yesterday.
